I was always partial to loading up Greenland, myself. Seemed like you could strike in a lot of different directions from there.

So you're saying there would be a lot of additional infrstructure to build.

Sure, let's build a bridge from nowhere to nowhere that would cost God only knows how many billions to build and maintain.

We'll just print more money.

Russia greenliet their part in 2011. I dont think they would have trouble agreeing to restart it.

on our side, would mean rail link to the lower 48 and a new road/rail from Fairbanks to the Bering Strait.

That's something I can get behind.

They are about to build one actually.

it will be the longest suspension at roughly two miles, while the bering strait is 51 miles at it's narrowest point.

however the channel tunnel is 31.5 miles long at a depth of 246 ft. so that would be very doable.

As a bridge yes, possibly. What about the road systeem on either side after you cross this bridge?

There’s no good excuse for why we haven’t built a bridge (railway and roadway) across the Darien Gap, but the Bering Strait makes little sense.

This is a bit like the idea for helping bring water to California, Nevada, etc by creating a giant canal from Lake Superior. Once you start getting into the science and engineering needed for it, you quickly realize it's completely unfeasible..

Currently, the only thing that would make any sense there would be a hyperloop, but that's just scratching the surface. The biggest obstacle would be the engineering needed to either go under or along the floor of the Bering Straight (which goes down some 165 feet) or across some sort of bridge well above the water.

Any system would need to be heavily reinforced. The weather and water there can be brutal and it receives a decent amount of tectonic activity. Unless some magical mineral is discovered that creates anti-gravity or zero-point energy, there's simply not nearly enough reason nor drive to attempt such a feat.

Well you know the planet is warming and shite. If that passage were so fruitful, cargo ships would be running it constantly already.

I had a similar idea years ago about building a bridge from the Florida Keys to the Gulf Coast as a way to cut down drive time. However, it's not feasible because of the water depth, hurricanes and lack of land mass.

So stupid ideas are a habit

I was about 12 years old, a-hole. I was wondering how the family could shorten out time getting to south Florida for vacation. What's your excuse for being a dipshit?

1. A tunnel makes more sense than a bridge.

2. Neither a tunnel nor a bridge are feasible.

3. This idea is dumb. Why would you want another way for cheap Asian imports to enter North America?

Would do a tunnel... except for the whole Ring of Fire thing.

Which would be one of the plethora of reasons a bridge would not be a workable solution.

Frack Russia.

Dude, while I don’t care for Z, I will never, ever, ever trust the Russians. They have started more wars and death than any single country in the world since WW2.

Its not even close.

Have you ever looked at a road map of Alaska?

There are few roads. People fly float planes. This would be the ultimate bridge to no where.
