I thought mulatto and octaroon were off color and politically improper terms?

Maybe octaroon but mulatto and Creole are synonymous, aren’t they?

The Pope is the Pope. If you are so obsessed with making race-based classifications, that’s about you.

Give me Cardinal Sarah. I’d bet most conservative orthodox Catholics would agree with me. These Catholics are the ones who actually donate and go to the Church. They are the backbone of the Church. The faithful members that Francis went out of his way to insult and mock.

Creole includes all of the following: Whites of French descent, whites of Spanish descent, mixed race people included in the above and free people of color who identified culturally as French or Spanish.

In New Orleans Creole basically means “red” or light-skinned black people.

I live in an old neighborhood in the 7th and my elderly neighbors all identify as Creole and talk about how this has always been a Creole neighborhood. My Nextdoor neighbors are dark-skinned Haitians but other neighbors have told me that when they were little, black people weren’t really “allowed” to cross Broad to get to my neighborhood so take all this for what it’s worth.

Censuses do not mean jack. My great grandfather was 100% German - his father was from Saxony and his mother was from Bavaria. However, I saw one census that listed him as negro. Also, I did a DNA test and the results stated that I am 0% African.

I phrased it that way for a reason.

The pope’s maternal grandparents, both of whom are described as Black or mulatto in various historical records

That's not a high bar in the early 20th Century.

I’m starting to believe that she is actually dumber than Joy Behar, which is an incredible feat.

The Creole thing is debated among some people, iIn N.O. The term came to be used for people of French, Caribbean and African ancestry. The Charbonnets and Morials are of Creole descent whether they acknowledge it or not.

1. A person of European descent born especially in the West Indies or Spanish America
2. A white person descended from early French or Spanish settlers and born in the U.S. Gulf states.
3. A person of mixed French or Spanish and Black descent speaking a dialect of French or Spanish

The 3rd were referred to as a quadroons or octoroons but those terms were deemed offensive so it became black Creole. That too was considered offensive, so now everyone is using the Creole moniker.

My maternal side of the family has black blood. I figure I’m 1/64 black, but I’m as white. No negro characteristics at all. My ancestors left Acadiana in the the early 1900s for California, where many of them remain today. Once in California, some married white people and their race changed to white. But some married other black or partially blacks and to this day they identify as black. Only one of the siblings from back then remained in Louisiana, my great grandfather, who moved to New Orleans and slightly changed the spelling of his last name and claimed he was Spanish, and thereafter was identified as white.
