The Number of People Over 40 Giving Birth Surpasses Teens for the First Time

Just a few decades ago, the idea of having kids in your 40s was nearly unheard of. Nowadays, though, having kids in your 40s is fairly standard. More and more couples consider waiting to have kids in order to travel, work, or just to keep their lives calm before the chaos starts—and this idea is no longer taboo.
New data from the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) proves just how much this trend has increased over the past few years: Research shows that more parents than ever are starting families well into their 40s.
The birthrate is declining
The first part of the study, which was released in early March, found that people are having fewer children than ever. Between 1990 and 2023, the number of babies born in the U.S. dropped by 14%. The data also show that this number is continuing to decline. For example, parents in the U.S. had an average of 1.66 children in both 2021 and 2022; in 2023, that average dropped to 1.62 children.1
There could be many reasons for this change, including the increasing costs of homes and childcare, or a growing focus among young people on travel and career.
People are having kids later in life
The more interesting part of the data is that for the first time, the number of parents giving birth who are aged 40 and over has surpassed the number of teenagers giving birth. This is a good thing, because the U.S. has been trying to lower the teen birth rate for years, and clearly we've had some success.2
It also shows that older parents having babies has become a sizable demographic. Looking at statistics, the increase is striking. For instance, the report found that between 1990 to 2023, fertility rates for birthing parents aged 35 to 39 shot up 71%. And while it might once been considered unsafe to have a baby in your 40s, the fertility rate among birthing parents aged 40 to 44 and 45 and older went up a whopping 127%.1

I am sure those trends are all perfectly in synch across ethnic groups.

I'm almost 40. I can't imagine having a newborn right now. I'm too damn tired to clean the fricking kitchen after dinner and get the kids to bed already. No way could I handle household duties, work, raising two growing kids, AND a newborn right now.

It’s crazy the amount of people I know of that are utilizing IVF.

I'll turn 40 this year I and had a baby 6 months ago. Our third kid.
I'm in a PhD program, too. I had the baby last semester (missed one week of classes) and I bring him to class with me on M and W nights.
this is not an easy chapter of life.
But having a baby again is AWESOME and I want 10 more just like him.

If a person shoots at a cop, they deserve to get shot.

Dual income households and daycare is fricking nuts definitely a huge factor.
Everyone in my wife/I's friend group didnt have their 1st until mid 30s. All of them focusing on career and realizing how much it is just to have a kid with daycare costs these days kept people working and not wanting to have a kid for quite some time.
My wife and I just had our 1st kid in 2023 at 37ish (37 for her, 36 for me). Our closest friends have 2 kids at the daycare we're at with our kid now and they pay $700 a week. My buddy went and got a vasectomy a month after the 2nd child went into daycare.

We had 2 in daycare for 2 years (2019-2021). We still haven't recovered financially.

It's pretty insane the cost (guess obviously depends on where you live). Where we are we are paying $1,560/mo for an almost 2 year old. This is for a place that only speaks Spanish, btw

We were paying $1,352/mo just over a month ago but they raised their rates because so many other daycares were trying to poach their teachers opening up offering them more money so they had to substantially raise their rates to keep their teachers there.
If you want to talk the best form of birth control, it's definitely putting a kid into daycare
