Good NYT article on why subway (and any infrastructure) construction in NYC costs so much more than the rest of the world. Unfortunately the answers won't really surprise you.

agreed... good article. And only a few surprises. These people really should be in charge of healthcare.

And politicians and citizens in NY wonder why their taxes have to be so high.

This is what true investigative journalism is. In this case they're going after politicians and groups commonly aligned with the Democratic party (which most media types support).

Sadly, they will then turn around and endorse those same politicians in any race against a Republican, simply because they can't stand to see a Republican win a race.

And these people want me to feel sorry for them because things are so expensive. This crap is just one of the many reasons things are so expensive but people choose to overlook that fact.

I can't stand when these people vote in the corrupt politicians who grease the palms of their friends using taxpayer money then bitch about it. Then they move to lower tax states and bring their fricked up mentality with them. They will vote for the same liberal hacks they just left and frick up another state.

Keep your dumb butts up there and clean up your own crap and leave the rest of us in peace.

I always thought naming one of the money pits in Boston, produced during the Big Dig fiasco, after Tip O'Neil was fitting.

Every time a Bostonian drives through Tip O'Neil Tunnel they can be reminded this is where we buried all that money.

This coming from the people who got rich off these contracts.

"There's nothing to see here....".

Where is the oversight?

200 extra jobs at $200k per year would be $40m per year. They are asking why the project costs billions more than a project in Paris. Employment costs aren't the problem.

Maybe it is because they are tunneling through the most densely developed part of the most densely developed island on Earth?

Lol if them baws are making $200k they are being billed at double that. Add in the conglomerates of consultants and it’s easy to get into the billions.

They aren't. I was using a figure they would likely be billed at. But even double doesn't dent the costs. You are right with the side consultants, especially on the design side. It's tough to argue against extra planning in that area, but I have seen million dollar renovation designs for a park bathroom.

Meanwhile a good amount of the comments blame Trump

You know it has nothing to do with New York City being run 100% by Democrats and unions

In NYC if they’re a crane operator or TBM operator they probably make that or more. I don’t know the labor standard wages up there but know they’re ridiculous.

Hong Kong has an incredible subway system and is more dense, Tokyo also. London has one and they have to into account thousands of years of artifacts under the surface. I’m not saying it’s not going to be expensive, but there’s no reason for it to be 4+ times as expensive as anywhere else in the world that faces the same problems.

Business in New York. Lots of palms have to be greased.
