They are cynically trying to shift the Overton window to give the Left cover to resume their extremist talk. Most of the Left may still not fully return to the Literally Hitler tropes, but this gives them space to go back to "he's a threat to democracy!"

They’re not liberals. They’re evil. I really don’t think you can put the Lincoln Project on a political spectrum. You put them on a moral one, and they’re as evil as they come and will ally with anyone who will allow them to achieve their goals.
