The greatest element of power that the U.S. holds is our market/consumers. As a people we buy a lot. There is no other country that comes close. Want to get rich? Find a way to sell goods to the American people. It's about time a president used this leverage of power.

Consumption tax at the point of sale when the purchaser has the money will always be more efficient and less painless to pay than the income tax system where the pair may be broke by the time the taxes due.

So true! The shrunken trade deficit recently reported is almost completely due to the US exporting gold, which is not sustainable. That will go back up. There is little doubt that tariffs will help the trade deficit, but the recent shocking report is spurious.
