The federal government thrived with no income taxes for 137 years.

Would you be okay going back to that system of no income taxes?

FWIW the average tariff was 15% during that time period.

We already have “both”.

Technically we don’t have a value added tax but we have excise taxes. I don’t see a difference between the two.

I actually think there would be real riots, not just larp riots, if this were actually being pushed.

I don’t think the current generation could comprehend the idea of a no income tax system, they would think the apocalypse was nigh.

Internet Sales Tax ruling by SCOTUS kinda does pave the way for a Euro style VAT and/or elimination of income tax via sales/use taxation.

Sales/use/VAT taxes all people in the nation too. No more freeloading welfare people, and the wealthy still pay more since they buy more stuff, especially expensive stuff. (How much tax are any of us paying for John Travolta personal 747? How much is Travolta paying? Answer 0/100%)

Elimination of the tax on labor and the complex calculation system that goes with it has always been my #1 issue

I have always thought that a small percentage of income tax, depending on the individual's pay amount, would be fair. And no refunds. The government would have to operate on a budget based on that much smaller tax revenue, as opposed to continually expanding government and the cost of it, and then having to find new and exotic ways of paying for said govt expansion.

But to answer OP- yes, I would be fine with no income taxes. I could sure as hell use the extra 20% pay.

THIS WOULD BE AMAZING.

Also amazing would be the people who have 10s of babies to get higher refunds who now have no refund, but are stuck taking care of 20 kids they didn't want.

It would stop a lot of people from having so many babies and being a burden on the welfare system. WIN WIN.

So the right wing wants us to go back to the days of the hillbillies in the holler fighting the revenuers. But instead of living on dirt roads with no electricity, phone or gas service, they want all the benefits of modern society for free.

No. We don't want to pay the government, and in turn paying those who don't work through government welfare programs, for the right to work.

Who determines what is fair?

Tax on labor is not moral.

AND back then we didn't have millions of FedGov employees sucking up enough tax dollars to build the most wealthy counties in the whole USA -- the ones right around Washington DC !

More than 40 million Americans were not on some sort of social welfare at that time either.

Just think the revenue if there was a 1% or even .5% federal tax on internet purchases. It’s never enough for these people.
