The FBI took her life savings. Now she’s fighting to help others get theirs back

Linda Martin thought she was being responsible by putting her nest egg in a safe deposit box where she wouldn’t be tempted to touch it.

She never imagined the FBI would seize her life savings.

"They didn't tell us why they took our money. They haven't told us anything as far as what we did wrong," Martin, 58, told Fox News. "We haven't done anything wrong. We work and we saved our money because we were trying to save and buy a house."

Two years later, Martin still doesn’t know why her money was taken or if she’ll ever get it back.

"The FBI, they feel like they can get away with anything," she said. "I just feel like it's unfair."

On March 22, 2021, the FBI seized Martin's and 1,400 other customers' safe deposit boxes from U.S. Private Vaults, a Beverly Hills–based company. The FBI took the $40,200 Linda was saving for a down payment on a home in addition to another $86 million in cash and tens of millions more in gold, silver, jewelry and other valuables from other safe deposit box renters.

Martin found out about the raid while watching the local news with her husband.

"I just couldn't believe it," Martin said. "I really didn't believe it. I sat down to start watching the news with him, and the FBI was raiding our private vault place."

Several months later, she received a notice stating that the FBI wanted to keep her money through a process known as civil forfeiture. Confused by the legal jargon, Martin chose to file a petition with the bureau, the first option listed on their notice, without realizing doing so conceded that her property could be forfeited and, consequently, allowing the FBI to determine if she could get her money back.

"Unfortunately, this is legal," Institute for Justice attorney Bob Belden told Fox News. "Civil forfeiture is a process in the United States where law enforcement can take property from people who have never been charged with a crime."

So the DOJ lied and said they weren't taking the items. Then they did.

Could a lawyer please explain how this is legal?

Meaning: Let's say there were 1000 safety deposit boxes and maybe one safety deposit box was a drug smuggler/true criminal. Why didn't they just seize the guilty safety deposit box?

Where does all of this money go?

This Lady should be called as a witness in Jordan's investigation. And she should become a regular at Trump rallies. 2 to 1 she's well spoken and rock solid honest.

I honestly do not know if the FBI/CIA/et al can ever be trusted again, as Hannity's "rank and file" have shown that they will do anything to keep their cushy job and not break COC. "Just following orders" hasn't cut it since Nuremburg.

Civil forfeiture is a massive clusterfrick.

It is INTENDED to be used against, say, Al Capone and others who made massive amounts of money under illegal acts.

In practice, it has become “Some guy sold a joint in this apartment building, seize the whole building and require the owner to put up 10% bond to even TRY to get it back.”

A judge dismissed that case earlier. This must be the appeal.
Business Insider

If she has a $40,000 in a box then I’m sure she can document where it came from and that it was reported to the IRS. She will be fine.

Another example of why civil asset forfeiture needs to die a horrible death, buried underneath the town hall, and every piece of shite who used it on anyone needs to….it really pisses me off.

Even if they are guilty, they aren’t proven guilty yet in a court. It’s extremely un-American.

To an unregulated black ops slush fund.
Call it the Ray Epps/ANTIFA support fund.

What civilized person wouldn't be, SF. But I think he's about learned his lesson; we all have in the last few years.

They have driven out the honest folk and replaced them with lackies and thugs whose honor can be bought with a price. The Cartels Bosses must smirk and laugh when they are accused by the Dems of being the bad guys. Kinda like Putin.

Documents also said US Private Vaults did not rent solely to criminal customers and many customers used its services for legitimate reasons.

Why the frick should she? This is goddamn America.

It’s not like she got stopped with $40k and 3 kilos of cocaine.

They were literally raiding a business and just took everyone else’s stuff.

frick the FBI. frick the DOJ.

You must have taken a different Civics course than I did. That is not how our Legal System is supposed to work. Innocent Until Proven Guilty.
