To get term limits to pass, there would likely need to be a grandfather clause for the current congressionals to be exempt and the law apply to their posterity. Eventually they would all wash out (even the John Conyer types).

I don’t think legislation can do this.

Would require a constitutional amendment, I believe.

Wasn’t this done before?

yes

and ruled unconstitutional; which is bullshite

LINK

my understanding is that STATES cannot impose term limits

but can the federal government?

we did need a constitutional amendment for POTUS term limits...

The Biggest Lie Trump told America “I will put together legislation for congressional term limits” Hands down the biggest let down of this administration. Trump being the first outsider president has a real chance to change DC and he has utterly failed. There is a reason this promise was #1 on his 100 day agenda, he ran on draining the swamp and beating establishment politicians. This entire board screamed to the high heaven for 2 years when trump was on the campaign trail to be anti establishment and rid congress of lifetime politicians sucking off the feet of the American tax payer. Trump played us all. All it takes is 1 tweet to set in motion his position on term limits yet he won’t address this at all. The media is obviously kept silent on it because they don’t want the American people to push trump on the issue. I’m highly disappointed in our president. He has the chance to inact long term positive change in DC instead he has now positioned himself to pass short term bills and executive orders. Biggest lie to the American people.

Congressional term limits and strict lobby reform would be devastating to the Swamp's survival. Trump should be banging this drum, if he starts calling for term limits and strict lobby reform the Swamp will have to go on record in order to push back and in doing so they'll expose themselves.

Not many Dims on that list in favor of term limits, I think that is why it'll be difficult to get the amendment passed, Dims know as long as there's an uninformed populace they will always exist.

The only way term-limits would ever become law is through a constitutional convention

I could be mistaken (1st time for everything). But, I thought the constitution gave states the power to set regulations for election to Congress. If that is right, then could not the states impose term limits.

The states cannot impose more restrictions than those laid out in the Constitution for Congressional candidates. I believe Thornton is the SCOTUS case that decided is.

ETA: U.S. Term Limits, Inc. v. Thorton is the case

quote:

The Constitution prohibits States from adopting Congressional qualifications in addition to those enumerated in the Constitution. A state congressional term limits amendment is unconstitutional if it has the likely effect of handicapping a class of candidates and "has the sole purpose of creating additional qualifications indirectly." Furthermore, "...allowing individual States to craft their own congressional qualifications would erode the structure designed by the Framers to form a 'more perfect Union.'"

How the shite do you expect him to submit that to congress right now? This congress doesn’t get along for what color the sky is.

Regardless of if you support him or not, your be an imbecile not to agree that he has faces the more opposition than any other president in a long time. To chastise him for not getting it done in year one, let alone 100 days, is ridiculous. If you truly believe in term limits then find a way to engage our elected officials about this.

If Congress passed a law saying the sky was blue, MSNBC would lead the headline "GOP lies, sky contains all colors of the visible EM spectrum"

Hands down the biggest let down of this administration.

Did you honestly believe this would happen? To get term limits, you have to rely on a term limit Constitutional amendment being passed by the people that the limits would be imposed on.

It's a nice thing to say during a campaign, as Trump did, but its not practical and therefore not worth the time.
