This is what is lost on all this. These are negotiation tactics.

Bingo. Trump is a negotiator. He believes in America & is fighting for a more even playing field.

Trump is throwing shite at a wall and hoping it sticks. The plan is there is no plan. And guess at whose expense, the American people.

I never thought I would see the day when Republicnas are arguing for more restrictions, less free trade, and more government involvement. Has Trump really fricked you guys up that badly?

Learn History

The federal government was funded exclusively by tariffs until 1913 when the democrats pushed for and were able to get the 16th amendment to the US constitution passed. How did they do it? The y said the cost of everything would go down without tariffs replaced by a tiny income tax. How has that worked out for the country?

Tariffs and no federal income tax = booming economy and less government.

So we should continue to follow the same path from the last 40 years of less innovation, more outsourcing, and high deficits?

Where has that gotten us besides 37t and growing in debt. Trump really wants free trade (we don’t have that now), he is pushing for permanent tax cuts, deregulation of industries, and more domestic energy production

Except that you can't have the best of both worlds. The only way tariffs can fund the government is if we continue to import. In fact to be a replacement for income taxes we would have to significantly increase our imports to increase tariffs revenue.

If the tariffs achieve the stated goal of bringing manufacturing output back and we import less then less tariff revenues will be collected.

There is no plausible scenario in which tariffs can generate enough revenue to replace income taxes.

You didn't bother to think about this much apparently

Turned us into the greatest superpower the world has ever seen, with unmatched wealth, where our poor people are richer than 95% of the rest of the world? Yes, this was a huge mistake.

We aren't operating under "free trade". Do some more research, listen to opinions other than your own, like the attached video.
You'll probably learn something.

So are these negotiation tactics or a way to bring manufacturing back?

I keep seeing people rotate between one or the other when convenient

Which is going to have ZERO impact on our debt. Have you seen what the Republicna lead congress has laid out for spneidng over the next 10 years. Oh yeah, our debt goes up to 55 trillion. None of what Trump is doing will reduce or affect the debt one fricking cent.

Where is all that money from the gold visas? I though Trump was going to wipe out the debt with those, and we would have trillions and trillions of dollars flocking here by billionaires that wasnt US citizenship. I'm waiting...

You're asking how things have worked out from the time when we were an emerging power to the period where we're a dual hegemon for 50 years and then the world's single hegemon for 30?

Does it become "plausible " if we cut a trillion dollars of government waste, fraud, and abuse and attract more manufacturing in America using tariffs, tax incentives and deregulation???

THAT is the plan. Folks are allowing the propaganda narrative to not see or understand the big picture.

The gold visas are one part of an overall plan, as are tariffs. Try harder.

Says a guy on a message board! Tell us, oh wise one, how did you make your billions in the Hotel and real-estate business??
Do you seriously think Trump and his team sit in a room and throw shite on the wall?? Lol
Trump has been talking about this idea since the 70's. The video has been posted here several times.

What? We were the Superpower since 1945. What we did was make China a Superpower. So much so, that we can't even keep up with backwoods Russia when it comes to producing arms for our military. Are you blind? If we went to war with China today it would be ugly. We get most everything from them. How do you think that would go? Carving out our manufacturing base didn't make us a Superpower. Sure, some people go rich, but the middle class got decimated. If you can't defend yourself or get someone else to do it all your wealth won't help you much.

So are tariffs a negotiating tactice, or are they bringing manufacturing back? Are we just going to dust off boomers from the closet and put them back on the assembly line? This isn't the 70s bro. You literally believe what everyone else says instead of actually thinking logically.

We are NOT a manufacturing country anymore, and any return to that is a complete pipe dream. It's a fricking lie, and it isn't going to happen. It's all bullshite. Unless you want to become a 3rd world country, we will not go back to being a manufacturing society.

You think the federal income tax produced that?

No. Of course not. Go buy a calculator or something.
