but stand by my initial statement that this is bullshite.
Agree, but thats not how it works in many places. Go youtube squatters, and see how much pain they cause property owners and how difficult they are to remove.

If you get a legal eviction order the sheriff will throw out the squatter for the landlord.
This isn't rocket science.
I can see it now. A car thief can claim to be a squatter who rented your car and you have to file for a repossession order in a terminally slow court to get your car back.
Last I looked, a house is worth a lot more than most cars.

Also, as the article is presented this doesn’t sound like somebody that’s been there for 6 months. It sounds like they just popped in with a lease and said nope, I’m renting here.
LE shouldn’t be arbiters of these matters but the owner should get the benefit of the doubt. If it’s found they did have a lease and used LE to vacate the property….then the tenant should sue the hell out of the owner and owner charged with lying to the police. But the burden should be on the person waving around a document…not the legal owner of the property.

So, you are upset that this is a civil dispute under local law rather than a criminal matter?
How is it civil? Does the squatter have a lease? Is there a domestic relationship? Did the squatter have permission to break and enter? Did the squatter occupy illegally and not violate criminal statutes?

Just look at the posts ITT. Mentions of a "posse" and gunfire and creating a hostile environment in the residence. The law is designed to prevent violence by discouraging that sort of behavior.
Allowing this kind of insanity to happen will lead directly to violence because lazy and stupid government allowed grand theft, fraud and trespass a way to flourish. When government is negligent or grossly incompetent to deal with real major grievances, many people take matters into their own hands in one form or another.

Burn it down with them in it. Make it look like they did it. Get a new house.
Win win

The woman was deployed in our military. While she was away, a man broke into her home. He cost her a $495K cash sale, in addition to any damage he's done to the home. She was set to clear $150K.
If he'd taken her $25K car, he'd be facing up to $100K and 20yrs in jail. But instead he took her home, and the police say "Not our problem."
It is absurd.
Breaking and entering, fraud, trespass and grand theft? What could be wrong with that to the liberal mind?

This squatters rights bull shite needs to stop.
I'm actually surprised we haven't heard yet how the red cross, dhs, and other NGOs haven't taught the illegals how to "properly" take advantage of squatting "rights" on peoples land.

Why send your kids to some foreign land under the lie that they are fighting for our freedom?
Would you prefer to see our military dominated by Chavez type commies?

Good to see some sanity on this. "Squatter's rights" are nothing more that breaking and entering, grand theft, trespassing and making a mockery of our stupidly inept, leftist infested legal system.

Is there an underlying criminal violation? Sometimes. Should there be an arrrest? Arguably yes. But to regain POSSESSION of the premises you still need an FED action.

Looks like MI was able to change the law yrs ago to make it a criminal issue, so why other states arent following suit is the issue.
YouTube - Can't be said to be a racial issue either with this example

If I steal a car can I just tell the cops “no this is mine” and present fake registration do they let me go because it’s a civil matter? If I have a home invasion and the invaders show a lease to the cops do they just raise their hands and say “nope this is a civil matter”?
Maybe someone will "rent" Hank's car from him and show a fake rental agreement to the cops before they go to the chop shop.
