10 min., no. But if they need special help and accommodations or have real behavior issues they need to be in a special class. 2 teachers that I know spend their day babysitting in mid-elementary vs teaching. Not right.

Maybe, maybe even probably; but shoving these kids in a “special room “ all day would do more harm than good - they need to learn how to interact with others
Why not have them go thru the same school, have their special classes in "special rooms," and let them socialize between classes/lunch/etc? Even have some regular classes that they can handle.

Bring back designated LD classes and insane asylums.

However, some of these kids are of above average intelligence and benefit from the rigors of a regular classroom for some subjects
There can’t be a “one size fits all” solution and many areas don’t have resources for any of it
I’m interested to see where this story/lawsuit goes

I have a son that has done Special Needs in an Austin school for 20 years and the topic of how to handle is huge, and the info offered above does not do it justice.
1. Half of the resource person is tied up in managing legal responses as parents work the monetary leverage.
2 the other half is spent breaking up fights and mayhem and yes , my son has gone to the hospital for treatment
Pushing the social responsibility for taking care of high support needs children {physical/mental} on a school system designed to teach large populations is wrong.
Examining section 504 is good.

ahhh texas, home of the RINOs that win the state house and put a democrat in as speaker. same Rinos that repeatedly attempted to impeach their own republican AG ken Paxton. Can't win shite when dems infiltrate and eat the party from within.

504 plans provide accommodations for students with disabilities so they can learn in a regular classroom.
I taught high school for a year. I’m not an expert in 504 plans, but can speak from experience.
504 was a colossal headache. I would have classes where half of my students had a plan. The vast majority of them were for ADHD. Their accommodations were almost always “more time to submit work.” Deadlines became impossible to enforce. And I wasn’t allowed to fail any of them, even if they didn’t turn in a single assignment.
The one student I had with one of the traditional disabilities (blindness) worked circles around my other students, even the non 504 ones.
I’m not saying 504 needs to go away, but it does need a massive overhaul.

Very true about the no one size fits all situation we are in here.
I agree with you on fed money assistance here. Should be one of the only things the DoE should be gutted down too.
My dad has been a proponent of separating classes by sex. So essentially what I described social interaction wise, but all girl/boy class rooms. To improve proper competition within sexes. Perhaps that could assist with the ones with higher abilities. Then just tweak it some for them, say on test days. Obviously a factor are the teachers. Are they even being taught how to handle these students that are just needing a bit more attention??
Obviously we aren't talking the really disruptive type, that need to be handled differently. But ones that just mostly sit their quietly and learn. Like don't be a prick teacher and call on them knowing it'll trigger something. Test day they can go to another room or during a longer study hall period.

Mainstreaming special needs into the classrooms is a failed experiment. Any good it serves for the special needs students comes at the expense of the rest of the class.

All of that makes sense. So many parents today can be horribly abusive of the system. The OP seems like the type of person that has contributed to it getting there. Puts schools in a bad spot.
Very true.

504 / SWE / SPED = lowering standards.

These types definitely needed to be accommodated. Not ADHD or tranny kids.
Employers aren't going to have special deadline accommodations for ADHD or trannies. They need to learn how to meet deadlines. That's just as important as the material itself. These kids are just being set up to fail.
Now an actual physical issue would get accommodated for, if possible.

Thanks. This is exactly what I predicted. A non-serious response.
You’re going to pretend there is some philosophical motivation, aren’t you? And then you’re going to call yourself serious.

The state DoE can still implement a logical variation.
The Federal Department of Education needs to be disbanded…period.
