Talk about stepping all over your rights to give you a free drink from circle-k

Oh, and while I have you pulled over do you mind if I search your car?

I get it. But this is stupid. One guy lost his job temporarily for being late because of one of these stunts a few years ago.

I’d be looking for an excuse to use some turn signals to score a free coke cola.

No one loses their job for being late one time with a story behind it.

That guy was probably a shitty employee with a history.

Police should not infringe on a citizen’s freedom of movement without an articulable investigative purpose or to make the public safe. Their heart may be right but this is stupid; I can think of a number of bad situations that could arise from this and place the department in the line of civil liability - or worse.

Just the worst... lost a cop "friend" over this argument a few years back. I think they were giving out $20 gift cards. If pulling someone over is such an inherently dangerous thing, why increase exposure over a fricking free drink or $20?

stupid idea

1. Getting pulled over stresses people out. Not sure a stupid arse coupon is worth that to most people.

2. Pulling over for the cops can be dangerous, you gotta stop on the shoulder of a street and cars crashing into police stops is not uncommon. Silly to do that unnecessarily.

3. People are often in a rush. Losing 15-20 minutes on this bullshite isn't worth it.

4. Eventually one of these "good" stops is going to end very badly, the person will smart mouth the cop or do something perceived as dangerous and get shot.

Dumb idea all around. Totally based on "feelings" an nothing else.

My BIL got “pulled over” on the lake 4th of July. His daughters were both wearing there life jackets and they both got free T shirts. My BIL had a cold one popped open in his drink holder and the cop eye balled it but never said a word about it. Thanked them for wearing their life jackets and moved on his way.

And this was Claiborne Parish Sheriffs Office, not LDWF.

yes but it's possible this guy had a history of being late and was told never let it happen again, and then the police did it.

This is an idea that CLEARLY wasn't well thought out

I don't think you get how it works. They basically background check whoever they pull over and if they have any warrants they have to let them go since it was an unlawful stop. Doesn't matter what kind of warrant or if they see them doing anything illegally.

They also don't get the free drink though

I get why they are doing it but I don't agree with it. They are trying to do something that is good but could set themselves up to be in a bad situation.

Cops make up probable cause all day long. And it’s your word against theirs. Guess who the judge believes.

If they find something, they will find a reason to make it a lawful stop.

I would love to be pulled over and the cops can inspect my car as long as the drink coupon is a $30 card for Starbucks.

I think the same thing every time I pass an insurance checkpoint.

If I remember right, the cops handing this stuff out are designated and only on duty for that one purpose that day or time frame. So whoever they pull over has to be for the program.

Shoot out the tires. Seriously, this is one of hundreds of potential bad scenarios. If they move forward with this ill-conceived idea, the right answer would be you let the car go, by all means.
