More like “a payout pot for the peasants”. There might be 2 or 3 in that body that aren’t there to enrich themselves while smelling their own farts.

This was my first thought too. Trump just continued to show us who is swampy within the GOP ranks.
This fund wouldn't be in the news if it weren't for the GOP whiners, who are getting pushed out, so the majority of people would have no judgement on it, cause they'd have no clue of it. Other than a quick news blurb. And even then majority on the Right would be ok with it, as all agree the Biden Admin did bad things.
I hope Trump brings back the lawsuit, and does create his own fund for it. RINOs need to go. Let's hope TX pulls off another scalp tomorrow.

But it is in certain instances like this one. Congress gave the DOJ the power to award settlements against the government in 1956 with the judgment fund act. Congress amended it in 1977 to remove the monitary caps of $100k
Yeah, Congress created the judgment fund act, and Congress can take away those funds when they see it is being abused.
In this case POTUS filed a time-barred action against his own administration for a legal breach that occurred while he was President. The obvious conflicts of interest and appearance of self dealing are bad enough, but then he also included the laughable damage claim of $10 BILLION, based on an absurd application of the statutory damages provision.
The Judge questioned whether there was even a justiciable case or controversy, since the minimum requirement for a case or controversy is at least two adversarial parties.
But, rather than brief the issue and risk having the judge dismiss the case, POTUS entered into a private agreement with the DOJ and voluntarily dismissed his case, without having the judge include the settlement in a court order.
Now, Trump was aggrieved, and many of the J6 defendants and other Trump supporters are entitled to compensation. But there are legitimate, legal ways to achieve that.
Congress is justified in being upset, and it has the power to put a stop to it.
But it won't. The fund will be headlines for a little while, and then they will start cutting checks.
We might see headlines in a few weeks when Comey applies for the fund to pay him $8.647 MM.
