We have to protect domestic industries and we have to make them compete among themselves aggressively like Japan does.
Do you know anything about the Japanese economy and its growth the past 20 years? Why would you want to copy their gameplan?

Since you're spiking the football on tariff collections, why did Scott Bessent downplay their significance and role in the overall tariff policy just this week?

This place is clown world
I start a thread suggesting that we look to Japan for some guidance on school nutrition programs and everyone says it won't work because of brown people
Now they want to copy the one thing that Japan actually sucks at

But you’re paying for it!
If so, it is willingly - you don't have to purchase something made overseas if you don't want to - there are usually US produced items.
In the rare instances there are no US alternatives, the tariffs are usually quite low as they have always been.
The basic idea is to PROMOTE US production of ALL necessary items so that we are NEVER dependent on a foreign supply of required resources.
This makes the US stronger, more independent, and more prosperous in the long run.
BUT - if you want to continue supporting CHINA as they pay their slave-labor 19c an hour to produce your plastic yo-yos so they can sell them in the USA for $4.50 to prevent US from being able to compete with them while using their profits to further strangle US trading power ====> then move to China.

The US "made" vehicle you drive most likely has 50% foreign components.
So no, you do not always have a choice.

I’m not spiking the football - I simply posted results of tariffs and you can be your own judge.

GDP.
Now do our debt.
This growth you trumpet is a revolving door that helps no one and is a trainwreck that ends with the dollar losing it spot as the world currency.
You are disingenuous at best.
The government decided covid was the perfect oppotunity to kick borrowing money and printing money into high gear.
And trump was part of that problem at the beginning. he still doesn't want to do anything resembling an austere measure. But you take what you can get.

So what was the solution? Don’t criticize unless you have a better idea
That sure doesn't stop people from complaining about the Affordable Care Act.
Complain about it, say how bad it supposedly is, yet still do not have a better health care plan.
