Tariffs are bad--I hope Trump really is a free trader and all tariffs disappear

We all pay for tariffs. The reality is that tariffs hurt more businesses than they help over the long run. The Trump administration seems to be saying they are starting this trade war with a goal of reducing tariffs. I hope that is true.

Yes, the same as consumers pay for minimum wages.

I too hope that this is a temporary tactic to achieve a better long-term goal.

That would be the only way I see it turning out as a positive.

But it just seems like a terrible strategy if everybody knows it’s the strategy.

Which is why Bernie Sanders is at least consistent with his asinine and terrible economic policy views and supports both.

If Trump is really a free trader he has a funny way of showing it.

I agree but other countries imposing tariffs on US goods and the US taking it doesn’t equal free trade.

OK? I just said everybody knows.

But my point is that if the strategy is to institute bad policies with negative effects, with the hope that it will only be a temporary sacrifice, then letting everybody know that seems like it would give everybody else incentive to holdout longer than they would if they didn’t know the strategy.

I think this is the case. Trump is making an issue out of the trade disparity by using tariffs as a negotiating tool to level the playing field.

The only thing that i envy chinese is that their people are much more patriotic. They are willing to put up with some hardship for the sake of their country, unlike the pussies like the OP.

Andrew Jackson did it already. Campaigned for higher tariffs, in the end he was the most free trade president we’d ever had.

Come to think of it, andrew Jackson did a lot of the same things as trump.

Trump has stated NUMEROUS times that he's for no tariffs and no barriers when it comes to trade. The problem is that our trading partners do not believe the same thing.

Because they are policies of weaker and inferior nations, benefiting a few and harming the majority, while our policies have been to the benefit of the majority while a few may struggle.

We don’t have 4% of the world population but 24% of the world’s GDP and 35% is the world’s stock market capitalization for no reason. Companies want our business, domestic and international.

And that is THEIR problem. THEIR policies largely harm THEIR citizens. So then they want to buy our superior products and invest in our superior companies.

I believe that the President has said he would prefer elimination of all tariffs. Strong open competition among nations and companies will showcase the strengths of America's freedoms. Picking winners and losers through things like tariffs is not good for liberty and prosperity.
