I will never pretend to know how you folks feel watching this.

As long as the helicopters have aerial refueling capabilities they can fly them out.
The time required to pull that off isn’t there, especially for the sheer numbers of individuals/helicopters.
The people in Kabul are in a cleft stick.

So you don’t use them at all?
Please…

That seems a bit of a reach... thats a lot of people with limited space with the clock dwindling down.
I hope they can get everyone to safety

You're talking 1000's of people.
Around 50 on a Chinook.
Think.
We don’t have the assets or time for such an operation.
Imagine if they have anti-air capabilities.
The only way to pull this off, in my opinion, is a full ground assault to break the lines and create a “safe passage”, per se.

Ironically the war practically nobody wanted, Iraq, turned out somewhat better than the war practically everybody initially thought was justified. Iraq isn't a functioning western democracy but for the moment it isn't in chaos or controlled by a caliphate.

I never said it would be your main Avenue of getting people out.
But if they are there, you use them to get out who you can.

I believe it’s going to be a longer run than when they tried to rescue the hostages in Tehran.
I’m just catching up on the news. I’m not military but I think the folks in Kabul are screwed. For sure the Afghani’s. The Taliban is going to slaughter them from what I know.

They need to keep the runway at the airport operational.
And that basically comes down to if the Taliban wants to let them escape. They can mortar it from miles away.
Without that runway things become very difficult.

The Taliban does not know who they are messing with

Haven’t they already shelled it earlier? Or was that another airport?

More unconfirmed reports from #Afghanistan claim the Taliban have also taken Daykundi province between Herat & Kabul, a district in Nuristan province north-east of Kabul & a district in Logan province immed south. This is becoming a Taliban ring of districts around the capital.

As an aside, for those of us who aren’t military, do the officers become more obese with the higher rank?
That seems to be disgraceful, IMO.

It’s not a coincidence that Iraq hung Saddam pretty early on and we had to track down Osama in Pakistan years and years later.
