In the article, they never reveal the source of their 15,000 number, but only write, “There are believed to be about 15,000 active service personnel who are transgender.”

Military.net, a non-government organization also claimed this 15,000 number. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, Military.com is owned by Monster Worldwide, a subsidiary of Apollo, a Dutch multinational human resource consulting firm headquartered in Diemen, Netherlands.

They also didn’t identify the source of their number claim, but only wrote “Before discussions about discharging transgender troops became prominent in 2016, estimates placed the number at over 15,000.”

My best research found this in a Newsweek article.

As per Newsweek,
Research from the UCLA School of Law Williams Institute from 2014, based on the National Transgender Discrimination Survey, estimated that 15,500 transgender individuals were serving in the armed forces.

I would assume this would be classified as a medical retirement. If so they are getting an early start collecting a military retirement, sounds like that got a pretty sweet deal that they don't deserve.
