Was scheduling a routine surgery this morning & the surgeon's nurse told me that they were having to scramble to get surgical gowns masks, gloves, sheets, etc because "most of American surgical supplies come from China." Will have to use the old cloth-type gowns, sheets, etc. which will have to be washed & sterilized after every use. And only completely essential medical personnel are allowed in ER's or OP rooms.

That's what happens in a global economy when goods are made cheaper in other countries without alternate channels. Disrupt the supply chain, you're fricked.

When you outsource everything to China over the last 25 years this is what happens.

What's the problem? The U.S. is destined to be a service economy, not a manufacturing economy, right?

Almost sounds like a perfect way to collapse capitalist countries. Especially for those countries where corrupt leaders gave away their manufacturing for 40 years.

Hmmm.

We experienced major drug shortages when Hurricane Maria (iirc) obliterated Puerto Rico.

Where was this?

I work as a device rep and everything has been business as usual outside of everyone just talking about the virus. No speak of limited gowns, gloves, masks, caps, etc.

A B.R. general surgeon's office. Subsequently talked to a radiation therapist who said basically the same thing about the materials they use in their specialty.

That's where you are wrong. This isn't going to amount to much here, but it will be a wake up call, and China has shite where they eat.

mmmm I don't know about that.

There are a LOT of people who work in policy-making that are getting rich by doing China's bidding.

Are you saying that they will altruistically cut off their source of abundant wealth because it's the right thing to do?

The Dr on Joe Rogan's podcast mentioned a shortage of IVs after Maria because they are produced in Puerto Rico. So again the supply chain was wrecked due to forces outside of the US.

I live in Washington. The hospital I work for has canceled all elective procedures for the next 2 weeks because we are running out of PPE.

By "consumer" do you mean "the average American"? If so, then, the USA ist kaput.
