Spinoff thread.... What happened to laid back cops

When I was younger, the cops didn't act the way that they do now. They were alot more easy going. These officers now are locked and loaded... Ready for combat at all times. Whatever happened to being nice to people?
Are fewer officers injured in the line of duty now than there were 30 years ago? Is that why it is necessary to give them training that creates such a ready to shoot robot?

The media has helped put a target on their back. They feel more threatened by the general public now.

It depends on the environment they patrol. I live in an area that hasn't had a crime in 20 years. The cops are extremely laid back.
I know cops that work in war zones where there is a shooting every single night. If they get laid back they will get laid out.

Cops are trained differently now.
During the Mayberry era, you didn't hear phrases such as "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6".
The number of officers killed in the line of duty changed police training.

People not backing the badge are to blame

Cops are still as nice as ever, as long as you're not acting like an a-hole.

OK... I can see this as a possibility. Is there any evidence that the current combat ready tactics are actually reducing officer injuries?

I don't blame this at all. People can't be expected to be rational. People can't be expected to grasp differences in criminal liability, civil liability, and differences in perception among officers and witnesses.

No, not that I'm aware of. But I'm sure there's a survivor fallacy at play, which will be difficult to overcome.

Did you happen to catch that video from Arizona?

When a cop shoots a criminal there will be a long thread on here bashing cops, regardless of the fact that cops are trained to shoot people and know the law

Inner city tensions.
Typically the police in the country aren't consistently being put into high risk situations.

There are plenty of laid-back cops just as there are plenty of sane liberals out there. They just go unnoticed and unreported on.

They put that target on their own back when they declared war on the general public. They shouldn't be surprised when cops get ambushed. A lot of cops come from the military now and treat Americans like they're still in Afghanistan fighting Isis. A lot of them work a ton of overtime doing security at bars or whatever. They are either tired when they're doing their real job or on drugs to stay awake. Until juries start putting them in jail they are going to keep on killing unarmed people.

Yeah I watched it and I think that cop should die in prison or of some awful, tortuous way.
Some cops are dicks and some are cool. I don't have run ins with the law except maybe once every few years if I'm caught speeding.
When i used to still drink I would just walk up to on duty cops during Mardi Gras and just act like I've been friends with them forever. They always responded in kind.

There's a cop who sits along a street where I jog with his radar gun tracking cars. He gets a kick out of putting his gun (radar) on me and urging me to speed up.
There are still cool and competent cops out there. We seldom hear about them.

True. But also ask them what it was like "back in the day". You'll hear stories about how an older generation dealt with rowdy drunks that will horrify you.

That was a completely different culture for cops and society.

They started hiring maniacs with Napoleon complexes and little dick syndrome. Plus the feds kept paying to give them tanks and rocket launchers and all kinds of other military bullshite.
