I’m on the fence. In theory you are right. The prudent thing is to pay down the debt. On the other hand, I feel like I’m being taxed to death. I just looked back on my returns, and last year I paid over $26k in federal income tax (not counting Social Security and Medicare taxes), and for what? So dems can piss it away on waste, fraud, and corruption? We should get a dividend for cutting out this graft.

Agree.

"because I said so!"

I don't know about y'all, but as a child that's the only explanation I got from my parents. This was the ONLY 'trigger' that existed in the 70's & 80's.... "because I said so!". Infuriating.

There is little detail. But it was hinted it would only be for net taxpayers, emphasizing 'payer'. Hopefully it will be weighted towards amounts of taxes paid also.

How much? Depends on cuts and that won't be known till we find out about the budget and how badly and stupidly Congress fricks it up with a CR (it isn't a question if, but only degrees).

There's lots of R's that are in hiding right now that hate DOGE too. They will show up on the CR vote to block meaningful codified versions of DOGE recommendations. Actual cuts; not waste/fraud. They will spin it to make it look like they are tagging along with the Massie wing who will vote no because it doesn't cut enough.

If done right, it should be returned only to those who paid taxes. It’s their own money . The amount should decrease based on taxes paid.

Like I said, when the government operates in the black, look at it. Until then, it makes zero sense.

Opinions are all over the place on this, so here are some simple truths:

1. If we gave out even $2,000 to most people it would have a very noticeable effect on inflation.
2. If that money was given out and accompanied by an equal amount of cuts in graft and wasteful spending there would be roughly zero inflation.
3. If the cuts were made, and no money was handed out, nor was the money supply increased to match the cuts, there would be deflation caused by economic slowdown. And no one wants this because the economic slowdown would increase government spending on entitlements and decrease taxes collected, not to mention cause unemployment.

This is why Trump wants to hand out checks; it’s to restimulate an economy that would have had a ton of government spending removed from circulation. PlusI’m sure he wants the good ratings it would yield.

I’m just gonna subtract mine on my tax return so I make sure I get my dividend.

is this liberal common sense? Kind of comical really. Let me guess, you think ELON is stealing our SS too?
no it’s math common sense.

I’m guessing (not much of a guess) you never actually bothered to look at what was in that 2 trillion dollar bill.

Do the math on what those checks roughly totaled to. Then realize how much of that 2 trillion went elsewhere.

My personal favorite was the 1.25 billion that went to concert venues.

Elon is shutting down whatever parts of government he seems waste fraud or abuse.

Instead of paying back what we owe on debt, he'd like to distribute it to the people in a socialist fashion where we all share his victory of reduced services.
