I generally agree but it is complicated imo. Iranians do not like this regime's corruption but they see the conflicts with Israel and the US has an existential religious struggle. So those who die in the struggle are martyrs both for their people but also faith. I truly believe an Iran left to its own devices with a huge power vacuum across their decentralized power structure is a recipe for internal conflict.

I think both things can be true, that Iranians want to reform their government and that the regime has a strong base of support that is beyond what we originally estimated in January. And you are right to suggest that any attack is seen as existential and thus the 'rally around the flag' effect makes the regime difficult to displace.
I personally think that the best case scenario for Iran is to be like Pakistan and Egypt, countries where the military of each are predominant and ever present through the country, as I think the IRGC, given the fact they can employ a decentralized strategy in the first place with decent effectiveness, can centralize after the fighting. I also think that our strikes likely sidelined the less hawkish old school, killing leaders who paved their way through the IRGC during the Iran-Iraq War and instead has elevated a younger officer class who cut their teeth against the US in Iraq and against everyone but the Syrians and Russians in Syria.
The big difference between other militaries of the rest of the region and the Iranians is that faced with a choice, the other militaries would never have decentralized. In addition, without targeting those specific leaders in the aftermath of this war with something tangible, the likelihood of those newer officers using their new found power to go against the IRGC is low.

These people have been fighting each other for centuries. Even in Vietnam it seems carpet bombing was a short term solution. We still had to send boots on the ground. They knew we'd eventually get tired and go home which we did.
Right now Iran knows it can wait it out unless we send boots on the ground, and make the change. The religious zealots ruling are not going to give up so easy.

That's where I am now. Just load up bombers and keep dropping conventional bombs by the trainload. Just annihilate everything standing in the straits. And then do the same thing to each and every IRGC and Military facility in the country. If we kill a million people then so be it. frick them.
Because we've got enough dumb bombs in storage to pave that place.
