Rep Rick Allen (R) of Georgia, recently told a reporter that he’s for raising the retirement age. He said “People want to work longer” and that they come up to him and tell him that all the time.

How in the hell does he expect anyone to believe that shite? People are just walking up to him and saying they wanna work into the years they are supposed to be retiring?

Well… you wanna know what people walk up to me and say? They want all those freaking perks and generous lifetime retirement yanked from congressional stooges. Why not? Surely they wanna work longer too!

Just come out and say it. We got to keep the leeches fed and the host has to take the kick in the arse again. Just say it. We all know it’s coming. Just say it and not some bullshite no one believes.

This^^^ is just one of many things you'll see proposed in the coming years, I think means testing for Social Security and Medicare is likely along with no payroll cap on social security and Medicare taxes..

I work out of home, so will likely work until the day I die. I find work stimulating mentally and profit a good thing.

The gubment sold it (and forced citizens to buy it) as an insurance plan. They need to pay up.

The gubment has no money and creates no value. What you're saying is that the taxpayers (the 40% of us who actually pay federal income taxes) need to pay up. The whole thing is a Ponzi scheme that would make Bernie Madoff blush. It can't be done immediately, but it should be phased out over time.

When social security was enacted, the “retirement age” was the exact same as life expectancy. Since then, life expectancy has risen dramatically. So, people are living far longer, and social security is no longer viable.

So we’re just gonna sacrifice millennials who can’t advance in their roles because old AF boomers are still working

When SS was passed, the life expectancy for a man was 59, but you couldn't draw it until 65. It was insurance against being too old and feeble to work, but still being alive. Now life expectancy is 76 years, but you can still draw as early as 62. Somewhere along the way Social Security went from insurance to retirement plan in people's minds.

Life expectancy has gone up but just because people are living longer doesn’t make all those extra years viable for employment. Some 76 year olds are fully capable of full time employment, the majority are not. Depends heavily on individual health as well as their type of employment.

Life expectancy has gone up, wages and the % collected has also increased as well.

SS has become the retirement plan as there are few opportunities outside govt jobs offering a pension.

Anyone banking on SS as a retirement plan, other than legitimately disabled, has already lost. Social Security is for poor people, it's a "safety net". It's not a retirement plan. It's not a pension.

Which is why Roth IRA's should have no income limit and no cap. Neither should Traditional IRA's or 401k's.

And mandatory minimum withdrawals once you reach retirement age are also bullshite.

Children need to be taught financial literacy from Kindergarten through 12th grade.

Anyone having that attitude is in for a rude awakening. Every single job has 401k matching. Relying on Social Security for your retirement plan is ridiculous.

What people miss in this discussion is what kind of jobs people work.

I can be a lawyer, doctor, accountant, engineer, social worker, etc. for longer than 70 years old. What about plumbing, carpentry, welder, laborer, etc. ?

Big difference. Something needs to be done, but one size does not fit all.
