THIS! I can't believe the OP is even debating this in his head. Don't be scared that your kids may grow up to think differently than what you have indoctrinated them with their entire lives

Rhodes is her top choice and it is going to cost about $11k a year after scholarships.

I find it hard to believe you're questioning whether $7000 or $11000 per year is worth an Ivy League education.

It's worth it...provided she isn't majoring in Art History. Frick, the connections along would probably be worth it even if she majors in Art History.

I've worked closely with one Ivy grad. He was an idiot that rode his Cornell degree to upper management then got fired for not being able to do the job.

He's peddling MLM crap on Facebook now.

I don't subscribe to the school of thought that an Ivy education is better.

Says the guy who was a middling student at Mississippi State.

You actually have no clue what you are talking about here.

Having an Ivy league degree opens doors for that first gig. Just like having a Stanford degree, or MIT or etc etc etc.

But of course, let's worry about her becoming a lesbian feminazi. That's what is important here.

where did i say anything about that?

there are meta studies on this stuff. that includes "the first gig"

her advantage of going to princeton, due to prestige and grade inflation, will be having a shot at super elite med schools. if that is her plan, then this helps. if that isn't her plan...the cost may not be worth it (but $7k/year isn't bad at all)

i talked myself out of it b/c i didn't want my mom to either (1) frick herself over to help pay for it or (2) make her feel like her situation prevented me from going. i used to regret it. i don't now (at all)

In some ways you are right. Especially for a pre-med student where Organic Chemistry is the same subject regardless of institution. But the prestige of an Ivy League school is still valuable.

The Ivy league schools are true bastions of liberalism.

Only if she takes humanities, arts, english, etc...

If she's in a science program there's not much exposure to said nonsense. I wouldn't worry about it.

You are fuxking dumb I you don't let her go to Princeton.

I believe anc is posting this thread to get some ideas to discuss the topic with this daughter. She's probably grappling with the idea of going off to the northeast alone all by herself away from friend and family in a different culture.

Maybe anc can take 3 or 4 trips up to Princeton a semester to help her adjust or until his daughter gets sick of him coming up there.

again

there are big studies on this very issue. where you finish in your class is more indicative of your future prospects than where you went

He needs to tell her she has no choice but to go to Princeton if she has the opportunity. She needs to go to school with and befriend the smartest people in the most accomplished people possible. That will increase our chances of success.

its not, in fact, you can likely get a better education at the next level down.

I have met quite a few ivy leaguers, and for the most part they got in due to their connections not their smarts. So they weren't the smartest, but not dumb at all.

but who you meet...beyond value.

Based on one person?

I know dozens of Harvard and Yale students. They are among the most brilliant people I know.

I'm an alum of an in-state Louisiana school, and a top-40 engineering school in Ohio (notably not Ivy League). The level of education and quality of students at the Ohio school were WAY above the Louisiana school. I imagine its even more so at an Ivy League school.

My point is, not all college educations are created equal. Not by a long shot.

lol at you thinking I'm serious.

To the OP:

Let her go where she wants to. If you raised her proper she will form the right opinions regardless of what her professors teach. She is more likely to rebel against your preferred ideology if she catches on that you would deny her school choice due to politics.

Btw has she looked at Stanford? It's a great school for her degree my sister is currently enrolled there pursuing a career in genetic engineering. It's very diverse, it's not full of elitist pricks but rather regular kids who are very talented. It also seems politically neutral
