So, about that racist ride - Splash Mountain

my wife is a Disneyphile and lurks Disboards.
Apparently, there was a pass holder opening of Magic Kingdom earlier this week and while every other ride had a 5 minute wait, the wait for the racist ride was over 25 mins.
Also, there was apparently a 4 hour line to get into the gift shop.

What makes this ride racist?

No surprise, Splash Mountain is an iconic Disney fixture. The guarantee that they will replace it is enough for everyone to get one more time riding it as nostalgia

It's all frickin bullshite man
I would be shocked if a single person has ever rode splash mountain and got off offended by all the racism
Or if a single person has ever not rode splash mountain due to the racism

I think its gonna be the same ride but refurbished to fit Princess and the Frog instead of song of the south.

But seriously,
Ride is racist & must go buuuuuuut not until we try to get a little ROI on all this racist memorabilia
And if it was really racist, they’d shut down the ride until it was reconstructed
Now in their defense, despite splash mountain being iconic, the story isn’t really a big Disney classic. Whose kids even know that story? There’s no movie or anything. They’ve done away with these types over the years.

Disney made the merch instant collector's items.

It is, but it’s so forced. How you gonna work a mountain Into a story set in New Orleans? Why not turn it into Pride Rock with a Lion King theme? Just off the top of my head, that makes more sense

Mine do, we’ve watched Song of the South and read the books. Surprisingly they treat everyone equal and from my talks with them have no ill thoughts of others.

That's one hell of an idea.

I grew up reading them. Just sayin, it’s not in Disney’s top 50 in popularity

There is a large section of the ride that has frogs everywhere, probably helps with the refurbishment. Being based on a movie with black characters is gonna be a plus as far as disney us concerned as well.

“Well, we wouldn’t have to change out the frogs”
“But what about the huge mountain in a city that’s below sea level”
“Ehhh, no biggie”

Song of the South is pretty fricking racist BUT all of that had to do with the live action/uncle Remus parts of the movie. The ride is based on the animated parts of the movie with no controversy. Hell, the tale of Brer Rabbit & the briar patch has been around forever, long before Disney. It’s like an Aesop fable.

Lol. Again, I do think the fact that movie has a lot of black characters was a factor as well.

All this word about a racist ride but not one word about the children killed in Chicago this past month. Fricking SAD,

Here's the thing, they've been planning redoing this ride for well over a year. My assistant is a disneyphile as well and she was telling me about this when I was in Disneyland almost two years ago

Been on the ride 5 times.
I remembered the rabbit but honestly never made the connection to the movie until BLM told me.
