Smaller Populated States Deserve Less Representation

On Friday’s broadcast of HBO’s “Real Time,” Sen. Alex Padilla (D-CA) said that the fact that there are four senators representing North and South Dakota but only two representing California “should change, on a number of fronts.”
Host Bill Maher asked, “[T]here [are] four senators from the Dakota territory that represent about two-and-a-half million people, and you represent — one guy represents 20 million. That’s got to change, right?”
Padilla responded, “It should change, on a number of fronts. It’s why things — why not more things get done through the Senate. But let’s go back to the Electoral College, right? That’s not one person, one vote.”
He added, “It’s one of those long-lasting things that needs to be corrected. Go back to the founding of our nation and how imperfect it was, from the original sin in the Electoral College. We’ve made a lot of progress on a number of things, but representative democracy, still needs some work.”
Padilla also stated that California’s state policies eventually spread to the national level, “sometimes, despite the imperfect — again, Electoral College, U.S. Senate, filibuster, etc. That needs to go, that there’s an opportunity to leverage the size of our state, right?”

The Senate by its very creation is not, “supposed to get things done”
Our Republic is under assault

Dear god. This country would not exist in its current form, but for the compromise of equal representation of the state’s in the senate, and population based representation in the house.

the original sin in the Electoral College
frick that a-hole.
The whole point of the original structure of the Constitution was to prevent the very domination of such "superstates" over smaller states.

The whole point of two houses is to give small states like that power from being steamrolled by California’s 53 representatives in the house. Christ. It’s like that way for a reason.
And one of the huge reasons at the founding of the country was so slave states didn’t crush smaller states like Rhode Island and Vermont.
ETA: one thing that legitimately terrifies me is californians having even more of an influence over me 2000 miles away.
What does California want done nationally that they don’t already have in place in their state? Why do they have to drag the rest of us along. Their economy is strong enough isn’t it?

Democrats seem confused by the purpose of the Senate, and why the small colonies even signed up to be part of the US next to their larger, more populated colonies.
Had something to do with some form of compromise... with one part of Congress - I think it was the Senate - representing each of the colonies equally, not according to population.
Likewise, the electoral college is all that prevents California and New York and a couple of other states from deciding every Presidential election.
Sounds like Bill wants mob rule, not a representative republic.

I guarantee they are not confused. They know exactly what they want and it is total control.

I bet Alex loves him some gerrymandering that insures minority populations are represented though

Senators are not supposed to represent the populace. They represent in Washington the concerns of the various state governments.
The house of representatives is supposed to be who speaks for the people.
How many representatives does California have versus the number north and south Dakota have?

Dakota is a state. In fact, two states now.
Two states = 4 Senators. Been that way for quite some time, Bill.
The Senators weren't designed to represent X number of people. They were designed to represent the individual state's interests.
The House was designed to represent X number of people, and it is indeed the House that should be expanded.

Progs are desperately trying to build their voting bloc and will do anything to make that happen.
Conservatives are too fat and happy, and will allow it to happen.

And that kind of thinking is why we should break up. They want totalitarianism.

Weird that Vermont or Delaware never gets mentioned in these conversations.

A US senator that couldn’t pass a 9th grade civics class.
