Gerrymandering is a disservice to EVERYONE. It basically ensures that at the federal level, little negotiating takes place. So problems stay in perpetual limbo. This has devastated Black communities in pa
But... But... Their representatives look like them!
Isn't that all that matters?

I dont agree with identity politics. Although to be fair, that happens in rural parts of the country that are majority white.
It's the politician that matters. Redistricting would ensure their is real competition amoungsts both parties and produce more center right and center left candidates. Versus now where we tend to get the worst of both parties. See Maxine Waters and Roy Moore.

Gerrymandering was just fine in the 60 out of 64 years from 1931 to 1995 when democrats were in control.
The only reason it is causing major election problems now, is because socialist democrat hypocrisy knows no bounds.

No. This isn't as easy as you think.
I would love to see non-partisan district drawn. But that would only help some. Fact is for the most part republicans live near republicans and dems live near dems.
You will lose some republican seats, lose some minority seats and pick up some white dem seats. You can see the political problem with that, if not the legal one.

I'll take the contrary stance here, I think we should abolish it. Start in one corner of the state and go from there with a standard grid pattern, making the boxes larger or smaller as population dictates.

We need some sort of non-partisan (I know I know) district reform. Gerrymandering makes room for extremists who never compromise and have no real accountability.

My favorite thing about gerrymandering is watching liberals bitch and moan about republics doing it and acting like they never have

Eurocat: Best analysis I have read about this issue.
quote:
Fresh out of grad school, Allen Raymond joined the GOP for one reason: rumor had it that there was big money to be made on the Republican side of the aisle. From the earliest days of the Republican Revolution through its culmination in the second Bush White House, Raymond played a key role in helping GOP candidates twist the truth beyond recognition during a decade of crucial and bitterly fought campaigns. His career took him from the nastiest of local elections in New Jersey backwaters through runs for Congress and the Senate and right up to a top management position in a bid for the presidency itself. It also took him to prison. Full of wit and candor, Raymond's account offers an astonishingly frank look at the black art of campaigning and the vagaries of the Republican establishment. Unlike many "architects" of the political scene, the author takes full responsibility for his actions -- even as he never misses a trick. A completely original tale of the disillusioning of a man who enters politics with no illusions, How to Rig an Election is a brilliant and hilarious expose of how the contemporary political game is really played.
Yeah, that doesn't seem biased at all. Nothing but the unvarnished truth.

Gerrymandering is a sword that cuts both ways. Both parties have done it and it hurts everyone.
There are plenty of computer programs which can figure out the most efficient divisions. Essentially they draw the smallest shapes which contain equal amounts of population. It also means that the average constituent is closer to their representative rather than have these snake-like districts that stretch hundreds of miles.
