Do you think he direct to consumer marketing of drugs be allowed or should it be relegated to just to healthcare workers since hey are the ones to make diagnoses and prescriptions. If we did limit it what effect would that have on drug prices and also r&d.

If it is not OTC, then I really do not see the need for as much advertising...

BTW, did you lose the "t" on your keyboard?

I would be more in favor of doctors NOT being on big pharm payrolls getting kickbacks.

I work in health care. I am a conservative. Yes there should be no direct to consumer ads from Pharma. Patients should be informed to make decisions, but that information should be unbiased.

Patients should not make health care decisions based on advertisements. Physician decisions should not be driven by patient demands. Do not care about financial effects on Pharma. Profits should be driven by results not patients hopes pinned on advertisements.

Agree with this as well. Medicine should be driven by data. Studies are well conducted and peer reviewed. That is all that should drive medical decisions. Period.

I'm in favor of the pharmaceutical companies advertising their prices for their drugs in all ads. It doesn't make any sense that 1 pill costs $1200 in Manhattan, $250 in Tampa, and $750 in Bunkie. Level the playing field which will help reduce health insurance costs.

Regulated by who? Politicians that are going to establish regulations based on their largest lobby groups and political donors? No thanks.

I say deregulate the industry as much as possible and let the public do their own research. I don't need your Nanny State.

Pharmaceutical ads are truly annoying, especially to doctors, I’m sure. They’re an attempt to create a demand among consumers based on limited info produced by Madison Avenue. I’m not sure there should be any legislation or new regulations to deal with them, though.

Big Pharm is sort of doing that now. Viagra comes immediately to mind.

What cracks me up is that half of the ad time is devoted to warnings about possible dangerous side- effects.

Eh, maybe not so much is what they're finding out.

LINK

Long article but super interesting. TL;DR version: many (maybe the majority) of the most popular drugs cannot have their original findings of effectiveness replicated in follow up studies.

The only thing you have posted with which I agree. The ads are a disgrace to prescribers, pharmacists, and patients.

I think the two go hand in hand.

6 months ago my doctor wanted to put me on one of the current drugs they are pimping on TV. My pharmacist laughed when I pulled up and said he didn't fill it because he knew I wasn't going to pay the extra 360 a month for it and that was after my insurance paid it's part.

The treatment for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, infectious disease, and many other illness has improved dramatically. To argue otherwise is disingenuous.

Every pharmaceutical ad on TV is directed at the consumer.

As much as I dislike the commercials, why shouldn't they be allowed to advertise?

I'm fine with allowing direct-to-consumer advertising, with the caveat that all ads must accompany 4x as many that extol the benefits of low carb diets and regular exercise, have to run from 3-5pm on kids stations and from 6-9pm on broadcast stations.
