Do you have any knowledge of these candidates whatsoever? Were they old or already sick?
There are thousands of elections taking place in NRW. A region, btw, with basically no AfD representation at the local or Landtag level.

I don’t know why Germans would be against a far right extremist party taking over like in the 1930s. What could possibly go wrong?
