I think this is a serious virus, obviously much worse than the regular flu.

However, it seems like the reaction from government is excessive given the data. For the mayor of a city the size of Los Angeles to be claiming that they need a minimum of a 2 month shelter in place order and be threatening to cut off power and water to "non-essential" businesses is insane. This would have to be the fricking plague on steroids to justify that kind of reaction given the economic and societal damage.

Sure. 400 deaths today with 100k infected. He only cited infection numbers as a comparator for flu which only applicable if mortality rate is the same.

It isn’t.

There are 1700 deaths now. Over half came in the last 3 days. You can’t sit there and be like “the infection trend doesn’t support having as many infections” and ignore the death trend that clearly shows way more deaths.

A lot more than five people out of a million are dying from it would be a starting point for me.

I think it's being overblown, but I don't think it's just worse than the flu. The flu doesn't put people below 50 in ventilators. I think this is serious and we should take it very seriously. I don't think we should shut down the economy over it. It's crazy how we as a society have talked ourselves in to only these two options. I want to do what Sweden has done or even less restrictive.

We don’t know. I hope a lot of people have had it or have very mild cases

Then how do you know what the mortality rate is?

Because we know covid is killing 400 a day so far. The flu is not doing that which none of you seem to grasp.

Yeah, but they're the only store near me with fresh squeezed orange and grapefruit juice. Actively looking for a alternative.

Are you sure about that? The 2017-18 flu season killed 60,000 Americans. The flu season is typically what, 3-4 months? Do the math.

So..again...how many deaths in the US do you expect in the next couple months?

No it hasn't. Records started being kept on Feb. 15th and the 400 thresh hold didn't reach 400 until March 22 so it hasn't been 400 a day.

Thats a rarity in Louisiana. Just sayin.
Not in north B.R. and many other places.

According to local news it's happening daily.

A 9mm can change healthy people to dropping in the streets verrrry quickly.

I realize we have to have protocols but do you see this changing in your present position? I’m sorry the patient is in this position now.

There is no question CV19 is more lethal than common flu. None! That is not the question. The question is, with non-economically disabling mitigation, can the death toll be controlled to < seasonal flu totals. If so, is is worth wrecking the US economy for?

Let's put it another way. In a 60K flu death year, we don't remotely consider shutting down the economy. We are looking at about 35K flu deaths this year. What if we can get the economy going and keep the combined flu + CV19 numbers less than 60K?

Would it be worth a Great Depression in order to lower death totals from 60K to 50K?

I tell you what OP let's keep a running tally of how many the flu has killed this year vs the Corona and see which is worse

Because we aren't fixated on the flu numbers like we are the Corona cases
