It's stunning how a 2 wk shutdown has caused some folks to lose their fricking minds.
That two week shutdown is costing some people their livelihood. That's where the losing their mind part comes in to play

This obviously transfers faster than the flu, but it doesn't affect the wide range of ages like the FLU.
We also have vaccines for the flu, yet millions get infected every year.
Also, California. They should be getting ravished by this. They aren't. Probably because it had been there since the fall.

.0011% of the residents of Louisiana are reported to have contracted Covid-19. That's not 1.1% just in case you get confused. The Governor has shut down the State. You tell me. Is this being over blown?

used Italy because they are about 2-3 week ahead of the States and a lot of other places in terms of when the virus really began to spread and take hold. Over 12k have died in 30 days in Italy.
They aren't 2-3 weeks ahead of us.

What in this makes you think it is?
Do you believe 'shutting down' the state doesn't help eliminate the spread?

I am curious to find out if the flu death rate goes up or down or stays the same during all this
I have read but have not been able to verify personally (on CDC website, for example) that pneumonia and influenza deaths are substantially down as COVID deaths emerge, which of course would make you wonder if the people we're trying to save from COVID would be dying from the next available virus.

Apparently, C-19 cures a lot.

Including rising GDP and falling unemployment.

Numbers started to spike last week in the Central Valley north of Los Angeles. Temperatures just started increasing in the Valley, hopefully some sunshine and people staying inside will keep this at bay. There’s 1MM people in the metro with a history of poor medical coverage in the area.

what threshold has to be crossed for you to change your mind?
It’s a good question, and I have posed the same question to myself...
For starters, I would probably need the number of COVID deaths in the US to pass the annual number of flu deaths in the Us.

Logic would say yes but do you think it was necessary? That's the question. Do you think Covid-19 just showed up in the last two weeks of February?

I don't possess the medical knowledge of viruses to answer this. My hunch would be that you do not either.

You think the decision should be based solely on medical knowledge?

We also have vaccines for the flu, yet millions get infected every year.
There are three main reasons for this:
1. Only a percentage of the population actually get the flu vaccine. Too few really.
2. The Flu virus mutates so rapidly that we have to guess which strain or strains to put in each year's vaccine. The result is inconsistent year to year.
3. Vaccines don't block you from getting infected with a virus, they arm your immunity with the antibodies and ability to identify a particular pathogen giving most people the ability to more effectively fight an infection. In the case of the flu, an effective vaccination may only reduce the severity of a flu infection, not stop you from becoming symptomatic.

If that were true then it would have been apparent at California hospitals by now.

Probably not entirely.
Majorly based, if you made me pick my preference.

quote:yeah and there were 20mil cases after 6 months in the us alone. do you honestly think 19 is going to be anywhere near that?
I was responding to someone who said they would take Corona seriously when it hit H1N1 numbers - which killed 12k in the USA in an entire season

The economic impact on people is just as important.
Frankly, this entire episode has shown just how much lip service everything ever said about caring about the little guy and small business has always been.
We've got a bunch of people who will likely weather the economic storm looking down their noses at everyone who won't and basically saying, "suck it up because I'm showing how noble I am right now!!!!"
It's just another fancy way of "helping" at other people's expense and then patting oneself on the back for it.

Question for you ... if we fought heart disease or the opioid epidemic like we are C-19, what do you think that would look like?

That most of the decision making about a virus should be left to medical knowledge?
