"well the republicans did it to them so it's only fair. As much as I hate to say that."
Do you mean not bringing Garland up for a vote? Or do you mean an actual filibuster? It's really not the same thing, though I can understand someone viewing it as a tit for tat.

I don't even really think unity is needed. The total lack of respect they act like they don't have for the other side is disheartening. Most of it is simply political theater for our benefit, and most people fall for it. Once the cameras are off, most of them get along fine with one another and socialize with each other.
Both sides have gotten to a point where they think only their side has the answers for how to govern this country. They often spend more time attacking the other side's vision than promoting their own. It's a toxic environment. Most issues have enough middle ground to where the country can still succeed, but neither is all that willing to find that middle ground on most issues.

The conservative electorate has continually punished any Republican that compromises with the left. They get blown out of their primaries in the next cycle. The polarization of the right created an environment where congress was unwilling to work with Obama on anything for fear of giving him legislative victories and dooming themselves in the next cycle.
Issues have nothing to do with any of this.

There is no compromise when the left is in power. Only capitulation. When the right is in power is the only time the left will consider compromise.

Republicans had the majority. Dems? Not so much.

The first week of Trump administration has been a straight up quest for revenge and has probably deepened divisions and confirmed moderate and left wing fears.
As someone who didn't vote for Trump, his first week he has done nothing but put American first which is what the damn President should do.

quote:No it is just that your 100 IQ impacts your reading comprehension capabilities. I stated that Obama was not perfect but he did in fact try in earnest to work with Republicans..even when he had the full government with his party. They made it clear they would not allow any bi-partisan compromise on his healthcare agenda so he went on his own. In this case, no attempt is even being made. Same result...different reason.
It's almost as if Obama is faultless in your world.

It eventually became clear that the Republicans were not going to rubber stamp any healthcare reform at all. This was an impasse.

Byproduct of the Tea Party movement. Obama shares some blame, but the Tea Party saw a surge in their movement almost immediately after his election in 2008 before he really had any time to do anything. The 2010 midterms galvanized the strategy of opposition as it scared Republicans over being primaried.
Democrats are headed down that same road right now, and it's hard not to cheer them on even though I see the toxicity of it.

If both sides are going to go nuclear all the time something eventually has to give.
Given the left's propensity for violence when they don't get their way I'd be willing to discuss their own country.
Ours has gotten too large IMO. There's no end to the machine. We spend money we don't have and people just ask that we do more. Is that path sustainable? I don't think so.

The people that voted them in didn't want to move closer to socialized medicine. They did our bidding as they were supposed to do.
