The sadder part is that these "public servants" find no problem with it. They think they have a right to do it for "the greater good" that us peons simply can't understand.?

It's truly crazy.

They are openly saying they want to be able prevent their constituents from knowing where they stand on possibly the most important vote a sitting Senator can cast.

Maybe next, they'll demand "secret" ballots on all controversial votes that could impact Senators in swing states.

It'd be tough for a Republican in the Senate to vote for impeachment.

Hence the push for a secret ballot.

That's not what he was getting at. The Senate doesn't vote for Impeachment. The House does.

Oh look I have a bite.

It's not a secret ballot if it still has to be written down and recorded for record.

The up or down votes don’t have to be entered in the journal unless at least 20 percent of those present vote to do so.

And under the Senate Rules for Impeachment, each Senator must give their guilty or not guilty vote in public.

The Senate has already adopted the rules for this trial?

That is not in the Constitution and can be changed at the Senate’s sole discretion.

Not for nothin but, there is basically a 0% chance that a secret ballot in the Senate would survive a FOIA request

Yes.

Only by a super-majority.

And the point still stands a secret ballot is not Constitutionally legal. There has to be a record.

FOIA request? Some staffer would leak that out with a quickness to save their boss’s arse at the expense of everyone else.

A freedom of information act request requires an actual document to be requested.

How do you request the documentation of an undocumented vote?

So it wouldn't be documented anywhere? No way to know who voted for what 70 yrs from now?

In any event, I still can't figure out how it wouldn't be blatantly obvious that a Republican Senator whose name didn't appear on the public record had voted to remove. Exactly what sort of benefit are we talking here?

He hasn’t even been impeached yet, and the Senate has already adopted the rules for its trial? Wut?

Because you say so? Kind of like the Sixth Amendment’s confrontation clause applying to a House impeachment proceeding (which is a lie)?

I can tell that you’ve never done a public records request.

Edit to clarify: You can’t request a government agency to manufacture a document for a question.

The document must already exist. A common mistake for public records requests.

What if I told you Senate Rules exist for all sorts of things? I can link you the PDF from Senate.gov if you'd like.

No. Because if it's recorded and can be made public, it's not a secret ballot.
