Networking. Before the internet this was how you networked, meet people, etc. It’s the same with the Greek system in colleges. My grandfather was in the KofC for 50 years and there was hardly anything secret about it. Hell, when I was older I’d go with him on occasion and I’m not even a Catholic. Nobody cared. A lot of those guys were cool, tough old grunt bastard s who served in WWII and Korea.

"Where did you go to school?" here in Louisiana doesn't mean university, it means secondary school.
I know my school was second tier in most ways, but those baws always tear up when I respond with "John Curtis".
Because they thought they played on a good FB team.
It was a shite show of a school in the 80s but damn could we play FB.
Bonus points for my parents paying zero tuition vs Catlick league parents working multiple jobs to put that R or J on their minivan.
Peaking in HS is definitely a Catlick League phenomenon.
I may still be drunk from Tuesday night.......
