On the Garland announcement - here's Dana Periono's take. His news conference is fifteen minutes before the WH chick's news conference. Perino thinks that Garland is going to announce a special counsel is being formed to investigate, therefore, the spokeswoman chick will be able to say she can't comment since the situation is under investigation.
Indeed it does sound like a coordinated afternoon by Biden and Garland.

Was the Secret Service guarding his garage?
If so there’s nothing wrong. We all keep classified stuff in our garages and basements.
Now if they were in their living quarters that would really be bad.

Biden said the papers were found in his library at home. So either his vette sits in his library or the papers are in the garage with the vette.

Serious question, why would anyone want any of these documents when they are packing up? If I left my job the first thing I would do is leave everything behind. My knowledge would be useful but I don’t need the sensitive documents to remember things.
This is a good question but the answer is nuanced.
First of all, for the POTUS and the VP, as well as other diplomats, much of their socializing with colleagues and international counterparts is often both private and public types of communications. For example, Personal notes from counterparts are often considered top-secret.
Another complicating factor is that these documents are considered to be future historical documents, and important in considering on-going U.S. foreign policy.
Thirdly, there is a conflicting claim that all activities of the government should be viewable by the electorate (think FOIA) unless it poses some risk to national security.
Remember too that modern president feel the need to control the narrative of their presidency even after they leave office and usually create a presidential library to document and attempt to glorify/scrub their image for public perception.
So, it’s a combination of factors that 1) the tendency to over classify documents “out of an abundance of caution” is out of control, 2) many documents are not easily categorized, 3) Presidents like to control the information (often illegally) about their presidency beyond their term in office, and 4) the president gets to decide what is confidential/top secret or not in most circumstances.
The real story in this case is that Trump was treated differently by the Dems in power who were conducting a witch hunt throughout his presidency and beyond, and Biden, who was in charge of that witch hunt (into his documents) was also doing the same thing (possessing top secret docs) even though he did not have the same authority to declassify as VP as Trump did as POTUS.

How THE frick are we not hanging this mother fricker out to dry at this point? When they did this shite to Trump you had an actual precedent set because of the POTUS' ability to declassify at will so to speak.
There is/was NEVER a precedent set where a fricking VICE President walked off with classified documents. This slimy mother fricker is WAAAAAY deeper in the shite than any of us will every really know. Holy frick.

Rest assured, The Media has already been given their talking points POST Garland speech.
It's really sad the amount of Press who actually aren't The Press anymore but just spokes people.

Not to worry. He didn't know they were there.
All we need now is a "no intent" news conference.
It's all good in the eyes of a democrat.
