My wife and I went in 2015. We used SF as a jumping off point and had an amazing time in the area (Monterrey, Carmel, Point Lobos, Muir Woods, Napa)
Monterey is the nicest, cleanest respectable part of Northern California...You have Pebble Beach and Carmel.
Once you start driving north through Ag fields to San Jose and then S.F. and Oakland and Sacramento it just sucks. There are a few nice places up North but past the Central Coast, Northern California from the Coast to the disastrous Central Valley is just a crime-ridden shitehole.

I get out there twice a year for business and can confirm it's bad.
The homeless are everywhere and you smell more weed on the streets than you do in Denver (which is saying something)

I was in Berkely a few months ago. Navigating insane bums with a toddler isn't much fun

Walnut Creek and that area is really nice and well taken care of. Once you head back through Oakland and pass the GGB, then it's back to shitty.

Taking care of the people is actually the root of the problem, there are so many social programs and people giving handouts to the homeless they flock to SF from other areas.
Cities all up and down the West Coast literally give homeless people bus tickets to S.F. by saying, don't worry S.F. will take care of you.
Guilliani gave homeless a one-way bus ticket to S.F. when he was cleaning up NYC.
Homeless get a living wage a month in S.F. (if they lived in New Mexico) but living in S.F. - that wage is just booze and drug money because they can't afford a place to live...S.F. has no middle class really anymore. It's just wealthy and bums sharing the same space.
The city is so fricked up, leadership has been a disaster for the last 30 years. This is the perfect test-case of what happens when you go full liberal policies. The rich pay to have bums living outside their home or apartment.

According to them the people crapping in the streets are totally blameless.

How is that even legal? Don't they have decency laws? At the very minimum, wouldn't it be indecent exposure?
I think it is the same reason as why people who walk around SF butt naked aren't arrested.
One time I saw a guy doing yoga butt naked at the intersection of Beach street and Hyde street directly across the street from the Hyde and Beach cable car turnaround.
The guy was doing a head stand butt naked and at the bottom of the street I saw a cop on a horse slowly going up the sidewalk towards him.
I thought for sure the cop was going to bust him for being naked in public and when the cop got to the naked upside down dude, the cop stopped and began talking to the naked guy. I walked closer so I could hear what the cop was saying to him.
To my surprise, the cop just told him to put away the yoga books he was selling because he didn't have a peddler's permit.
When the cop left, I walked up to him and asked him why he didn't arrest the guy for indecent exposure.
The cop told me that they won't arrest anyone for being naked in public unless a member of the public makes a citizen's arrest and is willing to show up in court as an eyewitness.
He said that never happens in Fisherman's Wharf because there are only tourists in the area and they go back to where they live and won't come back to SF just to testify against the naked person.
There are even naked bike riders in San Francisco who every year ride their bikes through Fisherman's Wharf just to get their jollies.

I would guess that anyone who is dressed decently and doesn't look like a homeless person is at least ticketed for indecent exposure for relieving themselves in public in SF

The homeless street people ruined the street scene in San Francisco for the street artists who are trying to make walking down a SF sidewalk an enjoyable experience.

Walking down Market is like playing Frogger.
But you aren't dodging cars, you are trying to dodge the homeless.

Read my post above this one for the reason why that won't happen.

It's so bad on Market street that I refuse to walk down Market street anymore.

They are making the same mistake in Seattle, as the homeless population increase they are creating more programs to feed, and provide care for the homeless leading to even more homeless people moving there.
Right. What do you get when you feed rats? You get more rats.

You could easily replace San Francisco with New Orleans in that statement.

It will be from drippings springs. To Georgetown. To bastrop. And south to San Marcos. A big shithole. I cant see the new Braunfels area turning to shite. At least I hope not.

My question is this:
Why are the homeless there shitting so damn much? Are they getting tanked on food?
