This was a major area that I worked in before retirement. Was just discussing it.

One of the issues with drones was identification at night. Good communications is currently key, but at night, imaging sensors are limited to thermal, gen 3 phosphorus tubes (typical black & green 'night vision'), SWIR and Lidar. Those technology work great, but, when color identification is absolutely necessary to achieve 'friend or foe' intelligence, those technologies fall apart.

Enter, SPAD technology. It is commonly used in robotics and as part of automotive autonomous driving systems, but they lacked resolution. Suddenly, high-resolution SPAD sensors have been announced that can achieve not only high definition resolution, but do it :

A. In full color
B. At night with light sensitivity of 0.00005 lux of illumination (think of an overcast, night sky without moonlight or even starlight)
C. Accurate targeting of targets that are either still or in-motion to the degree of accuracy of 7 trillionths of a second. (measures by constant speed of light and performs the calculation against that constant)
D. The ability to provide a flood of data and recreate, ad hoc, and live, an object or a scene in 3 dimensions.

These sensors take the available ambient light around an object and using highly specialized and essentially perfect optics that can only be created using AI managed robotics, at night can take every single photon of light, no matter how dim or distant, and replicate it by millions and do it without adding dark current noise or (if cooled to a low enough temperature while in operation (typically cooled to -12°C) no heat noise. The result is an astounding full accurate color video image of an object from 20 miles away in the darkest of night that can measure the distance (or position in space) with extreme accuracy and provide 3D analysis of mass and provide that 3D data visually. Essentially live as the delay in data is only limited by the speed of the processor(s) handling the data (hello AI data centers!)

Scary stuff if you're the target.

Hey Hubba, has anyone considered mass producing simple body shaped decoys with 98.6 F degree warmers in them? Maybe even simple automatronics for arm or head movement?

These could be used like duck decoys. Put our real soldiers behind thermal shields like a duck blinds, and set up dummy soldiers nearby to target the drones that come.

Well I probably should have given more detail in my original comment.

Both Russia and Ukraine are using drones of all types and developing tactics to terrorize the other sides population and to cause damage to the others economy. Look at what Ukraine has done to the oil industry in Russia. Look at what they are doing to the Russian company Wildberries which is the Russian version of Amazon. Could you imagine what it would be like in the United States if a terrorist group or some bad actor nation like Russia or Iran started taking out Amazon warehouses. What would happen if any of the same people attacked the oil platforms out in the Gulf or hit our refineries here in the US? Ukraine has more of an economic strategy to the war and bad people are watching and learning these tactics.

Now look at the tactics Russia is using with drones. It’s to terrorize the Ukraine population. Taking out shopping malls and other civilian targets. I was just talking the other day about how they are using FPV drones to find civilians walking down the street and attack them. Sky News had a report a few weeks ago about this Ukraine man that was a cart vendor. He was chased around his cart with an FPV drone and then severely wounded. A terror group like ISIS or Hezbollah would love to adopt those tactics. These drones are cheap and easy to get. So it’s not like it would be unheard of for terrorist groups to get these things.

The war in Ukraine is showing us exactly how unprepared the United States is for drone warfare. In particular the prevention of drones from attacking our cities. These things are about to change our lives in a negative way. The bad guys are watching and learning from both Russia and Ukraine on the tactics they can use.

You really believe don't you?

People said similar stuff until the USA unveiled the Stealth Bomber desert storm.

This is a totally different animal than the Stealth Bomber. Not just anyone in the world will build a stealth bomber. Drones can be bought and flown by anyone. Really!! Stealth Bomber lol!!

Listen to yourself. You don't even know what you are are saying. You said drones can be bought and flown by anyone? So you would have us believe that the most technically advanced, best trained, and highest funded military in the world is behind Russia and Ukraine in drone technology. Ukraine specifically when we are supplying them with weapons, yet we are lagging behind them in drone technology?

Yes, Stealth Bomber and you are missing my point. We hid the stealth bomber away for years until we felt there was a need to use it and spring the surprise on the world. Now you tell me what is more likely. That United States is lagging behind in drone technology to Russia and Ukraine or that we are just not letting anyone know exactly what we have?

Why do people keep saying we are behind?
We were using bad arse drones 20 years ago.

We have been using drones that shoot Hellfire missiles, operated by guys sitting in a Connex box in Nowhere, Nevada for two decades.

And people went nuts when they saw Russia and Ukraine dropping grenades from drones flying 40 feet over some dude curled in a fetal position. The US Army used the Switchblade drones as early as 2010/2011 in Afghanistan. More than a decade before the start of this conflict.

So cargo pants wastes patriot missiles lighting up the sky like its the fourth of July and now blames the US for not filling the candy store again.

You could be targeting Russia missile sites, instead you blow up refineries while he is lighting Kyiv arse up.

Yeah real sound strategy, lets see how it plays out.

Course it makes a lot of headlines for ukraine lovers, nevermind the dead citizens he is not protecting.

And now more news of corruption in his administration, he would make a somalian blush with all the theft.

Dude we just had a flap a couple of years ago with unidentified drones flying around all over the country and we couldn’t do anything about them. We have had our military bases airspace violated by unidentified drones. We have had commercial aircraft endangered by unidentified drones while they were in the air. There was a story not long ago I do believe about a plane coming in on final approach to land and a drone came out of nowhere. It happens more than you think.

If you are talking about the type drones Iran shoots at our military bases and the same type they sell to Russia to use in Ukraine then we are shooting those down with Patriot missiles that cost millions to make and we can’t produce very many per month. A drone that Iran makes cost around 30 thousand dollars give or take a few thousand and they can build them in no time flat. We are working on Directed Energy Weapons or lasers but that tech isn’t there yet.

Ukraine is the best country on earth when it comes to drone warfare. They have far more experience with drones than any other country on earth. They work with US companies to try and develop both offensive and defensive drone capabilities using lessons they are learning on the battlefield. The Gulf Arab states just called them in to advise them on how to stop some of these Iranian drones from getting through.

As far as the FPV and Quadcopter style drones go the best way Ukraine had found to stop those was a shotgun. It is almost impossible to stop those type drones. The FPV style drones are fast and very mobile. They have a charge inside them and can be detonated. The Quadcopter style can be armed in multiple ways. They can carry a mortar round. They can carry an incendiary device I assume is Willie Pete or White Phosphorus. Both Ukraine and Russia would fly these over the other sides trenches and basically horrifically burn anything under them. I think they can even attack a gun to the Quadcopter type that can carry a small number of rounds. That’s just the stuff I know about and can think of off the type of my head.

How would we ever detect these Quadcopter or FPV style drones coming should bad guys want to attack the United States using them? We have no national radar system that can pick these things up. We wouldn’t know until these things were blowing people and building up which is my point. All Ukraine can do is put up drone netting around major populated cities and clean up the mess after they attack.

I think the thinking behind the strategy is to put pressure on the Russian economy to the point that the people get pissed and force Putin to end the war. Problem is I don’t think Putin really cares what the people think. The Wildberries attacks has a two part strategy. To piss the people off for one and the other is to stop Russia from receiving drones and drone parts. Ukraine says Russia is getting both drones and drone parts through Wildberries so they have been taking out Wildberries warehouses left and right all over Russia.

Hmmm let’s see. Maybe invading other countries, like Ukraine for example.

I mean we’ve bombed innocents in a country that didn’t even invade us, but I don’t see any of yall telling everyone how wrong that is.

Besides a bunch of news articles, what else do you have to back this up? You would be surprised how we used drones and how many. You will be doubled surprise how well we adopt to new ideas with drones.

Well, thankfully we are learning too. Not that this war is good, but without it we may have been totally unprepared for something like this.

Visit the Sky News website or if you have Roku you can download the app for free. They cover the Russia/Ukraine war fairly regularly. I know they did a story about 2-3 weeks ago of the story I have mentioned on here several times now about the man from Ukraine that is a street car vendor and was chased around his cart with a FPV style drone and wounded. They had the video of that attack in the story.

Also I’m sure YouTube and similar outlets are full of videos. I have watched a lot of drone videos on YouTube. They usually will not let people post graphic stuff. You get the point though.

That’s true. We need to worry more though because drones are cheap and easy to hide. The Russia/Ukraine war is basically teaching terrorist groups how to attack the United States and make it easier than it has ever been before.

FFS.

If that is truly your virtue signaling litmus test, you have a short list of non-war-crimes countries.

Putin was wrong to invade, but he made it absolutely clear that Ukraine was red line in the sand, and then Joetato goes out and says NATO accession is up to Ukraine to decide.

Pollyanna says countries should get to make their own decisions, but the real world says “real world”.

This dumbass war would have never happened if Joe were not a brain dead puppet.

Ohh okay. So it’s okay then for Russia to bomb and invade the country of Ukraine then is what you’re saying? They have legitimate excuses for bombing Ukrainians? But Ukraine can’t bomb and attack Russia back is that what you’re saying? Who has more of a legitimate excuse to bomb the other country?

US leads the world in drone tech. Are you serious? The issue with the US is they don't build drones to one off like Iran/Russia/Ukraine. This is where they need to improve. They believe in cutting edge technology so they land their drones and reuse them.

In recent years they've been developing low cost drone technology like Ukraine is using now and Ukraine has done a lot of agreements to help the US here. When you're fighting for survival, you improvise and the Ukrainians have done an impressive job with drone technology.

They're showing the US. The Iran war is also an excellent blueprint on future warfare for the US. They know does/doesn't work against them with layered defenses. Example, the HELIOS technology the Navy is using will likely now be mass produced into base defenses and aircraft.

The laser technology has been developed for quite awhile but it has been extremely effective at destroying drone swarms against Iran. Partly why they have no touched the Navy or even attempt to. It can fire forever and costs pennies to operate which solves the entire problem of a country sending thousands of relentless low cost drones. The problem is they have to figure out how to mass produce this and compliment missile defense systems like Patriots alongside getting around China's component restrictions for them.

The US problem is manufacturing it fast enough not tech. Ukraine would kill for some of the stuff the US has in their arsenal. They've even said it themselves which is why they want contracts with the US to compliment each other in building weapons. US reverse engineered Russia/iran's drones and made them 2x more advanced/effective. They used them against Iran in this war at the beginning. They rolled out a lot of new tech including the laser defenses. No doubt it was good testing grounds for defense contractors which are about to get some really big taxpayer money coming their way.
