The mainstream fake news in unison:
quote:

This war is not about NATO

Blackrock bought 30% of Ukraine farmland and is also getting the rebuilding contracts.

I think the better question would be what would Rob Reiner do?

Seems like he skipped right over the genocide committed by Russians against Ukrainians as well as agreeing to give up nukes in exchange for no aggression by Russia and support from the us should that occur

Just as you skip over NATO’s promise not to expand eastward.

I think Seldom Seen and GumboPot were put on the bench over discussions about a certain country. I'm not sure about OML, I think his general insanity puts him on thin ice here permanently.

Except NATO never promised that.

Declassified documents show security assurances against NATO expansion to Soviet leaders from Baker, Bush, Genscher, Kohl, Gates, Mitterrand, Thatcher, Hurd, Major, and Woerner

quote:

Washington D.C., December 12, 2017 – U.S. Secretary of State James Baker’s famous “not one inch eastward” assurance about NATO expansion in his meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on February 9, 1990, was part of a cascade of assurances about Soviet security given by Western leaders to Gorbachev and other Soviet officials throughout the process of German unification in 1990 and on into 1991, according to declassified U.S., Soviet, German, British and French documents posted today by the National Security Archive at George Washington University (LINK

The documents show that multiple national leaders were considering and rejecting Central and Eastern European membership in NATO as of early 1990 and through 1991, that discussions of NATO in the context of German unification negotiations in 1990 were not at all narrowly limited to the status of East German territory, and that subsequent Soviet and Russian complaints about being misled about NATO expansion were founded in written contemporaneous memcons and telcons at the highest levels.

The documents reinforce former CIA Director Robert Gates’s criticism of “pressing ahead with expansion of NATO eastward [in the 1990s], when Gorbachev and others were led to believe that wouldn’t happen.”[1] The key phrase, buttressed by the documents, is “led to believe.”

Well you are correct that there was no binding treaty. But the US told Russia in no uncertain terms that it wouldn’t happen. I guess the message to Russia is “You fricked up, you trusted us.”

It's all bullshite. Russia has been acting this way for 700 years. It's simply a consequence of having no geographic barriers to movement from Warsaw all the way to Moscow. The Russians will continue to act this way until they're financially or demographically unable.

Russia acts this way because it has been repeatedly invaded and decimated throughout history, from the Mongols to the Lithuanians to the Polish to the Swedish to the French to the Turks to the British to the Germans.

It is part of the Russian soul.

I've mentioned this once or twice before but I did a semester abroad in college way back in the 90s. We had a Russian general as a guest in one of the classes. The discussion delved into war and aggression, NATO, etc and someone asked him a question, I can't remember exactly what but it centered on defense. He replied "you British and Americans should thank God everyday for your geography, especially you Americans with two big oceans and Canada and Mexico, I don't mean to offend the Canadians and the Mexicans." He then pulled out and unfolded a map with dots all over it, each one pinpointing a NATO base or outpost or installation.

"We're surrounded," he said.

Solid post.

Whether people agree with them or not, it’s the mindset they are born with.

We’ve never had a Napoleon or Hitler.

Just well-funded caravans.

This fear has no place in the modern world.

It's completely irrational. And how does this fear even justify examples like the invasion of Georgia? They aren't in NATO and we're not invading Russia

That's you talking and your mindset placed upon others, dismissing the reality that millions upon millions of people feel. It is that dismissal and failure to properly assuage the situation that created this conflict to the level we see today.

There are two former regions of Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia, that are unique ethnic enclaves that were granted limited autonomy. Russia stationed peacekeeping troops, not a large amount, in these enclaves to maintain peace and order. And it worked, for many years. I actually saw them. It was usually just a few guards manning checkpoints with motor vehicles arms that they raised and lowered themselves. The point was to prevent these areas from descending into civil war until permanent arrangements could be met. Eventually, after many years, a Georgian government began the war by firing upon and attacking the Russian troops. Russia responded with eventual overwhelming force. Today, the areas have self rule and the people that live there are content.

Wish casting?

International invasions are extremely rare and most since the fall of the USSR have been from Russia
