In all honesty I could live with this, if (and a big IF) DC statehood included the land DC gave back to Virginia. This would result in Virginia losing a significant portion its deep blue northern counties. PR would not be as deeply blue as people assume it would be based on the reaction of San Juan’s major after Maria.
But honestly the answer to DC statehood is to shrink the federal district to just the WH, Capitol, and area around the mall between them (the population here is negligible), and give the rest back to Maryland.
The physical seats of the branches of government do not need to be inside any state.

The GOP would drown in negative media. Every media outlet in the United States and Europe would talk about nothing except racist Trump every day and every time he addressed Harris.
It is far better to continue drawing attention to the fact that the top of the Democratic ticket is a man suffering from early onset dementia And deteriorating more each day.
The Dems are praying that the GOP will elevate Harris by making this about her.

Luke Letlow has raised over 570K for the open 5th district seat. 2 other candidates have raised over 100K. This was as of July 4th, so I'm sure those numbers have gone up since then.
This is for a relatively rural district.
You can't raise that kind of money, without being bound to special interests.
