I don't think it's possible to come up with a prediction that's too farfetched in this. For instance, there's obviously something shady behind Pelosi's decision to forego traditional impeachment procedure. One guess is that this gives her an out as far as any question put to her in the way of "Why did you retreat from final steps?" To which she could answer "Didn't retreat because official impeachment was never actually instituted. It's an ongoing process."
If official, traditional impeachment proceedings are ultimately never opened then it's likely there will never be a battle over whistleblower having to come forth or not. And that would be that, Pelosi et al having rested upon the informal damage they intended to deliver upon Trump to begin with....only having used the term "whistleblower" in the process.
I could see Pelosi ultimately calling a press conference and announcing a "temporary suspension of impeachment proceedings in an effort to heal the country." Trying to play the hero. It's a disgusting possibility.
