Even in the supposedly anticommunist '50s there was little enthusiasm for the Korean War. Watch a movie called I Want You (1951), about characters getting drafted or reacting to the War. There are several scenes where people admit they don't understand why we're in the war, and other characters have to explain why (but sound half-hearted when they do it).

I've since learned that the wars were rarely clear cut in reality. It's why Woodrow Wilson illegally jailed opponents of WW1.

It wasn’t as clear cut as you think. Your view is from after the propaganda did its work. Why was Germany wrong in WW1? In WW2, there were significant numbers of Americans sympathizing with Hitler in the beginning - including Joseph Kennedy.
