Redneck Riviera Suspends use of Flock Cameras Effective immediately

I believe the responsible course at this point is to suspend our use of LPRs until there is clear and consistent statewide guidance governing their use.
LPR technology has been a valuable public safety tool for our department, assisting officers in locating wanted individuals, recovering stolen vehicles, finding missing persons, investigating serious crimes, and managing large-scale events.
However, we understand the concerns that have been raised regarding privacy, data retention, information sharing, and the overall use of this technology. Those concerns deserve to be taken seriously.
I do not believe protecting individual liberty and providing law enforcement with effective tools to protect our communities are mutually exclusive. We have a responsibility to do both, and any technology we use must meet that standard.
PCBPD will work with Flock to coordinate the removal of cameras from our jurisdiction as quickly as practical. We ask for the public's patience while that process is completed. Some cameras may remain physically in place for a period of time; however, PCBPD's access to and use of the Flock system ends today.
We remain committed to protecting our community, respecting individual privacy, and maintaining the public's trust.

State law enforcement will have to comply until legal guidance is established, but not the feds. They have their own version from what I hear.

This entire episode is stupid and flock cameras will be back soon enough after this current hissy fit is over. You have no privacy rights on public roads. And I like law enforcement being able to track down criminals. I know I’ll be attacked but so what. No one has an attention span anymore. In a year or so the cameras will be back and no one will say a word because they’ll be outraged about something else. I have 4 cameras on my property and many of you do to. And I’ll be sharing any video I have with law enforcement if they need it to right a wrong. You can’t stop technology especially when it’s not illegal. Notice, this is all due to public pressure and not illegalities. The minute public pressure subsides they’ll be back.

Why cant they pass a law that individual access to flock data requires a warrant?
Having tech that automatically alerts law enforcement when wanted individuals are spotted is ground breaking and should be used. Letting ordinary cops access data to stalk their ex girlfriends should be a felony.
Its not that difficult.

You're right, the public does have a short attention span. Many, many localities depend on grants from the state or feds to spend money on tech that can't pay for itself, which is why our governor, always slower than DeSantis, killed state grants for ALPR.
We'll say this slowly, again. It's not just reading license plates or taking pictures of occupants. Every Apple Watch, Air Tag, smart phone, dog tracker and everything else on you and your kid's person is being associated with that of others in/near your vehicle, etc.

I understand. I just know when I buy a product they are tracking me and when I leave my house I have zero expectation of privacy. I choose to buy products because they are awesome even though I know I’m being tracked and followed. I’m in the internet inside my house right now and I know the company who made this product and web browser are tracking my every click. I don’t want to live like the Amish so I accept it.
As for flock, it’s the emotional talk of the summer of 2026. In 6 months everyone will have moved on and the cameras will still be here. And the politicians making points off them today will be mute in the future once the public moves on.
