And any brief guide to obtaining one (legally) in Louisiana.

Never owned a gun in a my life although not for ethical reasons. It feels increasingly absurd not to.

You don’t need one. Just call 911.

They’ll be there eventually.

I would buy 2 guns.
A 12 gauge and a pistol that is comfortable to you.
You need the ability to reload and have firepower simultaneously.

Start with a tactical shotgun for home defense. A handgun or rifle can be a next step, but both require some skill and training.

A double barrel shotgun with bird shot. Step out on the balcony and fire 2 shots and call 911.

If for home defense get a 9mm CZ Scorpion Pistol with brace. Wife can shoot. Won’t penetrate multiple walls but will kill bad guys.

Have an SBR suppressed version next to my bed.

Buy a cheap semi-auto 22LR. Learn to shoot with iron sights. Practice. Read up on whether a handgun, AR, or shotgun would best serve your home defense situation. Buy one. Learn to shoot it with iron sights. Practice. Buy an optic. Lose it in a boating accident.

get a Remington 870 shotgun and something like Sig 380.

Once you get comfortable with the Sig, you can give it to your wife and get a real pistol.

Nothing beats a pump 12 gauge for home protection. A carry pistol would be advisable as well.

Weatherby PA tactical 12-gauge. Shorter barrel and it has a pistol grip. Super easy to shoot.

9mm pistol, semiautomatic. Something small and easy to rack and shoot like a Smith & Wesson Shield or a Ruger LC9
