The right is undergoing a populist shift and at some point we'll need to come to terms with Reaganomics and Citizen's United. Both are contributors to the cultural rot that undermines working families.

Give me a constitutional argument against citizens, not an emotional one. Otherwise you are just like the left.

just re-enforces the thought that people really don't understand Citizens United.

Who remembers Jimmy Carter's zero based budget? You started at zero and had to justify everything you budgeted. It was impossible with the small company I worked for that adopted it when Jimmy proposed it. If we couldn't do, how do you justify every dollar you request with a federal budget? Good idea if it was at all possible but it would take you 10 years just to do one year's budget.

This idea is the right idea. It’s how to effectively implement it.

Start by getting rid of ridiculous and useless departments like Education and Energy. Sell off NPR. Fire sale. Everything must go.

Actually it was Will Rogers on Hubert Hoover. I’m not aware of any republicans using it ever other than a laugh moment. It’s a throwaway democrat gotcha ( they think anyways)

First off, we would have to get back to doing budgets instead of CRs.

You’re right. GHWB’s slur against Reagan’s economic plan was “voodoo economics.”

What do you think about the GAO? IMO it's toothless, largely ignored, and probably not as non-partisan as it should be. I think the GOP should work on making it actually a mechanism for accountability and fiscal sanity

if the Dems hadn’t gone back on their word there would not have been an issue. Dems created the problem, then blamed the republicans for not fixing them. It’s the playbook. How did you not know that?

trickle down economics

This is an expression of the only economics that exists. There is no other way. It ALWAYS comes from individuals, either by investment or by government theft.

Trickle down works far better than any alternative out there.

Republicans since Reagan have spent spent spent AND lowered taxes, creating worse deficits than Democrats.

The only President in our lifetime to run a surplus has been a Democrat

We just differ on the intent of the Founding Fathers as to whether pooling vast sums of money for corporate interests is protected 1A speech or not.
Poster Indefatigable said it well the other day: LINK

It’s a pretty amazing position the anti Citizens United crowd seems to hold. Apparently, despite the first amendment protecting both the right to speech and the right to assemble, the intersection of those two rights is unconstitutional
The consequences of a different finding would have made corporations unsuable, and mostly above the law.

can buy off the government by having their political donations seen as 1A free speech.
You should actually read the decision.

quote:

I think that broadening of the understanding of 1A free speech undermines the principle of one vote per individual which should be more salient in determining our ability to participate in gov't.
How do you have freedom of speech when the government has the ability to say "hey, that's too much" at it's own arbitrary limits?

And worst of all, if you ban assembled groups from participating in political activity... you've essentially banned smaller people banding together into bigger groups in the political arena. All you'll have left are the big players, with not even a chance of opposition from smaller groups.

And to be clear, I’m not opposed to a special tax on the ultra wealthy. Even if it’s for purely punitive reasons.
This is precisely what makes buying politicians valuable. When you have to "own" them to keep them from ruining you -- bribery becomes an "investment".

quote:

If they want to use the government to increase their stock value, they can pay 10% more in taxes.

When congress can cost you millions in regulation with 3-lines buried a bill, it's far cheaper to pay a congressman to keep that out.

The problem isn't that corporations are in Congress's pocket. The problem is Congress can pick the pockets of corporations with virtually zero limits.
