NEW YORK (AP) -- Wal-Mart Stores Inc. plans to eliminate health insurance coverage for some of its part-time U.S. employees in a move aimed at controlling rising health care costs of the nation's largest private employer.

Wal-Mart told The Associated Press that starting Jan. 1, it will no longer offer health insurance to employees who work less than an average of 30 hours a week. The move affects 30,000 employees, or about 5 percent of Wal-Mart's total part-time workforce, but comes after the company already had scaled back the number of part-time workers who were eligible for health insurance coverage since 2011.

The announcement follows similar decisions by Target, Home Depot and others to completely eliminate health insurance benefits for part-time employees. It also comes a day after Wal-Mart said it is teaming up with an online health insurance agency called DirectHealth.com to help customers shop for health insurance plans.

Should be a ton more of good news to come. Companies are announcing 2015 plan changes right now.

This is what happens when you have to pass a bill to determine with it entails.

Every single hack that supported this legislation should burn at the stake with it.

Never pass a bill without A: Knowing how to pay for it and B: Knowing what all is in it. As was predicted by many folks what we are seeing now is a tidal wave of businesses cheerfully dumping health care plans.

Going full on womb to tomb health care has its benefits and disadvantages. Our old system of health care had its benefits and disadvantages... more then full on government health care in my opinion. What we have now has none of the benefits of either policy and all of the downsides of both. This is going to cost a lot of money and bring down a lot of misery.

Just another reason health insurance shouldn't be tied to employment.

I agree with this, but since that's how you have to pay for it, it just makes sense. Problem now is more people aren't working, and Obamacare will ensure less will get a chance to work...How can these part-timers afford the ACA, without huge Gov't support/debt??? How do they make enough to warrant any part-time job? Just a question for those who know more than me on the issue???

These were part time associates that Walmart was providing coverage to... Most companies don't offer that benefit to PTers, so I don't see how this has anything to do with being tied to employment.

There's an individual market out there that has nothing to do with employers. It's been there for decades. Go try it.

This is working just like this particular President planned. Employers do all they can to avoid the new system leaving more uninsured. The masses rise up and boom we have a single payer system. It's going much faster than I originally thought. I do love how the law is changed over and over without even a hint of a vote.

I've often wondered why it was.

I can only surmise that it was originally intended as a job perk to attract top employees, along with matching 401k's (or even offering them), pensions, more vacation, etc....

Why are employers forced to offer and/or pay for insurance?
