When colonizers left, they didn't do it in a way that set up their former colonies for success. They drew country boarders in ways that made no sense that led to serious ethnic tensions within individual countries. They took what they wanted and bailed, and didn't give a shite about the people they fricked over.

They built successful infrastructure, left the hell hole better than they found it, and gave it back.

Then it went back to being a hell hole.

Can you name a single British colony in Africa that wasn't better off under British control? A single one?

In regards to Zimbabwe, whites left because Mugabe specifically crafted policies that targeted their land holdings

The British treated their colonies like garbage. The French actually tried to assimilate them into French society. Bad example.

Would you say these nations are better off for having been colonized?

yes

just because colonialism can be considered immoral (or downright evil) doesn't mean it wasn't a better option than leaving them alone

did any culture in SSA have a written language prior to colonialism? did any culture in SSA use the wheel? smelt iron? have any version of science/medicine?

Government can not bring wealth to a land but it can bring ruin.

Why do white Southerners care so much for Rhodesia/Zimbabwe so much? I mean it's in another continent. And your recent fascination with South Africa. It's like you're looking for an excuse of some kind. Some reason to say that there's something about race. Some point you are dying to make.

on what scale did any of these exist?

SSA was a continent of disorganized hunter gatherers and pastoral nomads for the most part when colonialists arrived

they were using bronze age technology and simple concepts like writing and steel didn't exist in any large usage

if we left them as they were, they would still be in the bronze age. you think that's leaving them better off? malaria kills hundreds of thousands of Africans today. imagine how many would die annually without modern medicine.

Did you know they used to have 500 coffee companies?

Now they have a whopping 3.

So you are arguing that the governments of another land meddling in other peoples society helped them? Doesn't that go against the political ideals of this board as a whole?

They didn't ask for help. And didn't want it. The only reason they were welcoming was because of the missionaries. They were nice to them, so they assumed all white people would be nice. They signed treaties that they didn't have the legal authority to sign under tribal law. They were duped.

it's become a defense of Western Culture (even the bad aspects of it) and an attack of socialism/leftist policies

Zimbabwe/Rhodesia is basically the modern East/West Germany or North/South Korea argument

Those are the ideals we hold for our government

That doesn't mean we can lie and say that things were not objectively better for all citizens of Rhodesia

Did you see that debate at a SA university where the students were saying black magic is just as legit a curriculum as physics?

do you think a society living in the bronze age is a superior path?

quote:

Doesn't that go against the political ideals of this board as a whole?

this is a historical argument, not an argument over political philosophy

quote:

They didn't ask for help. And didn't want it. The only reason they were welcoming was because of the missionaries. They were nice to them, so they assumed all white people would be nice. They signed treaties that they didn't have the legal authority to sign under tribal law. They were duped.

even if this amazingly modernistic, moral argument is 100% true it becomes irrelevant when they were stuck so far in their respective pasts that they were ripe for conquer. that's what happens to societies living in the past: they are conquered by modern societies who have developed new technology that gives them power over out-dated societies

we can cry about this all we want but it's an important part of our historical development

hell the last time i was arguing about SSA on this board one of my main arguments was the lack of any development within SSA (we're talking pre-colonialism by hundreds of years) limited empire within the continent. that left the continent with far too many nations to ever dream of developing. empire is a very important tool of the development of humanity. it cleared out the old and inefficient and consolidated cultures. this allowed more advancement and more culmination of collective works, etc etc etc
