GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy has vowed to “gut” the system for H-1B temporary worker visas if he wins the White House.

It’s the very system he’s used in the past to hire high-skilled foreign workers for the pharma company that built much of his wealth.

From 2018 through 2023, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services approved 29 applications for Ramaswamy’s former company, Roivant Sciences, to hire employees under H-1B visas, which allow U.S. companies to employ foreign workers in tech and other specialized jobs.

Yet, the H-1B system is “bad for everyone involved,” Ramaswamy told POLITICO.

It just makes the right liberals

Kind of like supporting redistributive welfare programs like Social Security and tariffs.

Without reading much into this, just because you take advantage of rules in place doesn’t mean you have to agree with them. That’s not hypocritical. We all play within a set of rules in society we don’t all agree with. That doesn’t mean you wouldn’t change some of them given the opportunity.

There is nothing hypocritical about wanting to change the law but taking advantage of the law as it exists.

For example: A person could want to raise income taxes but continue to pay the lower tax that is currently in place, and not be guilty of hypocrisy.

Vivek can use a program for his benefit, but think that the rule should be changed, without being a hypocrite.

I think that one year of mandatory service at 18 years old is a good idea, but when I was 18 I did not serve. I don’t consider that hypocritical. I am not willing to serve if the only thing society gets out of it is one person serving one year. But I am willing to serve if society receives a year of service for every person.

ETA: Well said, undertow. I would not have posted had I read your more succinct post.

Exactly. That's like saying an immigrant can't agree that stronger immigration laws are needed.

And for the record, I couldn't care less if he's used it or benefited from it multiple times I agree on the need to stop this practice. Stop the refugee and asylum process too imo.

It looks a lot like wealthy democrats who argue that the tax loopholes they use need to be closed.

Yeah that’s pretty much the same as me wanting to simplify the tax code that I now work to the best of my ability.

Not much of a gotcha here. Playing the hand I’m dealt doesn’t negate wanting to do the right thing.

Right. That’s not hypocritical. One might be willing to pay a million dollars more in taxes if it meant the treasury would get another $500 billion but not if it only meant another $1 million for the treasury.

I hate these arguments. Almost as bad as saying you’re a hypocrite for voting to lower taxes, because you’ve paid your taxes.
