Question for US history buffs

Conversation on the treadmill today at gym. Guy asks me about media obsession with Trump:
"Has there ever been an ex-president who dominated the news headlines as many days after leaving office?"
Me: 'I doubt it. My best guess would be Teddy Roosevelt but he was an ex-president over a longer period than 1.5 years.'
Thoughts?

No ex president has ever been a bigger threat to bust up their little country club, no.
Well there was JFK and we see how that ended.

recall the media in the past is not the same as today; however, these case a long shadow after they were in office
Jefferson
JQA - Was Speaker of the House after his presidency
Jackson - Was Dem Party kingmaker until his death
Teddy R
Nixon
Clinton
Obama

Probably not but the question is a little misleading because not only is Trump a former President but he is a likely future candidate for President.
But I agree Teddy or maybe JFK (for totally different reasoned)

He also ran again. But that is probably the closest analogy. Most of them ride into the sunset.
Taft was appointed Chief Justice of SCOTUS after his POTUS term, so maybe he would qualify too.

I wasn't around back then, but I would imagine Kennedy dominated the headlines for awhile, albeit for a very different reason.

Maybe. But Rush made Billions of dollars talking about the Clintons for 30 years.

So one guy versus all your liberal trash media outlets?

I think Teddy refused to run again initially and put his endorsement behind Taft. Then when he found Taft ineffective ran as a Third Party. Of course that opened the door for the Democrats and Woodrow Wilson to walk in. He was popular for sure, but not THAT popular

The 1912 POTUS election is Exhibit A of what happens when there is a third party in the race and splits the vote.
Wilson would have lost the election to either Roosevelt or Taft separately, but instead he won in a landslide.

quote:Taft certainly remained prominent as Chief Justice, but the question was "dominated the news headlines." Taft certainly did not do that. The actions of SCOTUS were usually not a big news item in those days.
Taft - Chief Justice of SCOTUS after presidency.

quote:He honored Washington's tradition of not seeking a third term. There is no doubt in my mind that he intended to serve as the de facto President thru Taft, and he decided to run again when Taft went his own way.
