So I teach Social Studies at a local BR school and our curriculum discusses slavery. The word "negro" comes up many times in the articles we read and passages we read. However, I've been told I'm not allowed to say the work (I'm a white male) and I need to exit it accordingly. My personal belief is that the word is not bad and that people manipulate the word much like retard, stupid, fig, etc and we've had the discussion. In my class. However, I've been told if I continue to use the word I will not have a job next year. Obviously, I want my job but am I wrong for believing there is nothing wrong with the word "negro"?

Public Education is Dead IMO. Sorry Bro. This is what happens when you put the Government in control of anything. Incompetence.

Listen to your bosses so you have a job next year, but bring it up in curriculum meeting and frame it in a way that makes them think you’re using it to truly convey the difficulties of the black man

No issue, then. Especially in context.

there is nothing wrong with the word "negro"?

Words are neither good nor bad. People are the ones that grant meaning and context to the particular vibrations of vocal cords or an arrangement of markings on a page.

"Negro" has fallen out of common parlance for a variety of reasons. There was a time when it was seen as a positive alternative to the prevalent "n word," and even embraced by blacks in our own vocabulary (hence the name of the NAACP).

If your curriculum discusses slavery, that word is going to come up. It has to. It's part and parcel of that period. Simply uttering it in context would only offend someone already seeking to be offended. That is not a reasonable person.

Unfortunately for you, academia is chock full of unreasonable individuals when it comes to vocabulary.

This shouldn't be an issue but here is my advice.

1. Don't use it in casual instruction, your students are not bright enough to understand this at first and it sounds like that neither is your school leadership.

2. If you are using primary or secondary historical sources it should not be edited. Most Louisiana curriculum has the word in English books being taught like To Kill a Mockingbird and Fredrick Douglas's Narrative.

3. If you need to, send a form home explaining what is going to be taught.

4. If your leadership does not understand that the word is being used in a historical context, you should be silently looking for a new job.

Great question.

From what I understand in recent legislative history, the term 'negro' is no longer authorized for use in federal documents, codes, laws. The same goes for the term 'oriental'.

President Obama signed it into law with the Local Public Works Capital Development and Investment Act on May 20th, 2016. Prior to that, President Clinton allowed the term to be used. President Trump hasn't addressed the language.

Personally... I don't use the word, but I don't skip over it in text either. It has significant value in historical text. However, as government employee you should follow your employers lead and refrain from its use, considering the legislation mentioned above.

Good luck... working for the government sucks. Did it for 25+ years. Don't miss it at all.

Have all your students watch the 1983 movie “Trading Places”. If they don’t unanimously laugh at the usage of the word “knee-grow” in that movie, then comply with your bosses and never use the word again.

I wouldn’t mind being the first american citizen to gladly give my life for freedom of speech. If they ever make it law that an american citizen will be arrested and lose their freedom over using the “n word” or any other word that some deem offensive, then yea, I’ll hurry out and say that word and wait for the police to fight to the death. I refuse to live in that country. If the Supreme Court overturns prior restraint, that’s a cause I will die for. I need a cause badly but no leader will rise up and lead. Rough times man.

Well I see yall won't be discussing the Negro League baseball association and how important it was in breaking the color barrier in professional baseball. Without it, no telling how long it might have taken to break that barrier.

Keep your job dude. You can still have your personal convictions with a pure heart and sleep easy at night.

Yea I totally isolate myself from anyone not directly related to me. In this current political climate, I have to stay away from people and absolutely never watch the news. It makes me evil and wish I was Josef Stalin so I could right the ship.
This is time critical for me though buddy. I’m getting up there in age I’m a 43 y/o generation x’er that needs the cause to hurry in up. While I can at least put up some resistance.
