We should make an effort to improve relations, and this is a small way of doing that. Despite our history and differences, we could form a strong economic and security partnership for the future, especially with how the EU is behaving

Why can't they be our ally? I would certainly like to have them as as friendly trading partner rather than isolate them into a cozy relationship with China as the current trend is going.

If he’s greedy and about money (as you probably agree with as do I), it would serve his best interests to fall in line. He’s an oligarch after all. Geopolitics is not all about bleeding hearts, it is typically about economic and strategic advantages.
